Substructure, the monthly night founded and curated by Ashley Capachione (Bathaus) and Isabella Koen (Sitting Adult), is trying to change the landscape. The event series, which happens at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain and also occasionally downtown at Good Life, aims to bridge numerous gaps that the founders noticed across the Boston scene: the gap between the DIY scene and larger venues, the gap of bookings for female and other marginalized and emerging performers, and the gap between women holding leadership positions within the city’s music scene.

Substructure’s mission includes:
-Promoting a safe space for women to perform, dance, learn, connect and collaborate.
-Building networks and alliances for marginalized performers.
-Creating and inspiring mentors and role models outside the usual mold.
-Supporting experimentation and work in progress.
-Encouraging technological exploration.
-Dismantling the over-sexualized image of the female performer.
-Developing leaders and inspiring women to advance to positions of power and influence in local communities and in the music industry/scene at large.
-Substructure focuses primarily on dance and experimental music, but has also hosted acts across genres.
