Skip your way into the deep dark forest of Upper Allston and check out the big toothy grins on a trio of surfy/troglodyte Massachusetts retropunk groups at Grandma’s House. Boston’s Nice Guys take that Angry Samoans template and put it through some sort of “Poledo”/Sebadoh III blender, which would rate a Grammy in a saner world. Northampton’s Zebu don’t bother obfuscating the totally tubular theme of their Chill Wave LP—the song titles might as well be “Surfing #1,” “Surfing #2,” etc., and that’s appropriate for an April night that finally isn’t snowy and freezing; they even throw some hot-roddy saxophone into the mix. Somebody at the MP3 factory really shanked it with labeling Ursula’s “Cavegrrl” digital single, since on inspection it’s pretty obvs the song’s actual name is “Motherfucker.” Are there more of these turgidly grinding, reductive, half-speed Arab on Radar tribute songs out there?
