The Boston Counter Cultural Compass began its life in 2010 as a monthly listing of underground shows, crammed onto 8.5×11 sheets of printer paper and spread across Boston’s campuses, cafes, and cultural centers on the wings of word of mouth and grassroots distribution. Today, between 5,000 to 10,000 copies of the Compass are distributed each month at 420 locations in the greater Boston area. Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, it has grown into a full-sized, four-page monthly zine that includes original artwork by local artists, longer features, and a curated listing of underground music, film, and art events in and around Boston.
In spite of its growth, and now simply called Boston Compass, the paper’s mission remains the same as it did in its the earliest, scrappiest days: to provide a platform for underground artists and a resource for the New England community by highlighting a rich, diverse world of local art and music that is not often represented in traditional media outlets. The Compass has always been an independent publication organized, curated, written, printed, and distributed entirely by volunteers. Along with the Boston Hassle’s website and shows, it is part of BRAIN Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and growing an innovative and interconnected arts community in New England.
