Ben Rivers’ Midnite Movies: The Witching Hour Part 3, “Because You’ve Never Known Fear Until it Stabs You in the Eye with a Rusty Nail” @ HFA

by

British filmmaker Ben Rivers’ latest retrospective of cinematic batshittery continues at the Harvard Film Archive with another month’s worth of deliriously off-kilter genre offerings. In his statement, Rivers explains that all of these films were shown to him as a preteen by a local eccentric who ran a video rental service out of the basement of a Methodist church in the tiny village of Somerset. While it’s unlikely this program was condoned by the church itself, it’s easy to see how it could have been a semireligious experience for the filmmaker: from the feverish Eurosploitation of THE VISITOR and REQUIEM FOR A VAMPIRE to the smartass video schlock of NIGHT OF THE COMET and RE-ANIMATOR, these features are enough to warp any impressionable mind. And if Italian goremeister Lucio Fulci’s THE BEYOND isn’t the most theologically sound glimpse of the afterlife, it’s certainly the most badass. Say amen, somebody. Hallelujah!
