Music at Bromfield Gallery – Mickey O’Hara and Arkm Foam

Arkm Foam is a Central Massachusetts-based improviser and performance artist using multi-media and collage-based recordings. Foam is known for collaborating in countless side projects and improvisational groups, as well as having a prolific recording output, and throwing several conceptual festivals. He performs solo and with a number of ongoing projects including Bang! Bros. with Mark Johnson, the tapes vs. turntable duo Foom & Foam, the cracked ‘blues’ band Illusions of Porpoise, the animalistic a capella theatre project Knight Howls with Frank Hurricane, the subversive conceptual/actual Rock-Band super-group Peace, Loving, a cassette poppin’ duo Tomatoverse with Joshua Burkett, and duos with Mickey O’Hara, and Andy Allen… and more surprises around every corner! He’s put out countless tapes on his own and on and Whitehaus Family Record and has releases on Feeding Tube Records, Mystra Records.
Worcester-based Mickey O’Hara is a pivotal member of the Worcester improv scene and longtime curator of the awesome Firehouse. He has used tape, samples, and feedback systems, ROLLZ-5, a paper circuit drum machine by Peter Blasser, and an arsenal of open-sourced public free software tools to create his music. His recent solo release “Stark Electronics” is described as traversing “completely alien topographies, where unstoppable sonic magma, hair-raising concrète zones, prickly Frankenstein grooves, and delicate interplanetary AI lullabies interlace with an unequivocal reverence of exploration and curiosity; a magnetic epic at once singular and mindbogglingly expansive.” In addition to his solo work, O’Hara plays in the electro-acoustic power and sound collage duo Lean with Seamus Williams and a number of other ad hoc groupings. He works & curates at the Firehouse in Worcester and co-hosts the freeform experimental radio show Music Under The Moon on WCUW. His solo work has been released on the Moss Archive, Baked Tapes, and Ayurvedic labels.
Variations: Music at Bromfield Gallery is a monthly series devoted to presenting site-specific performances of improvised music at the Bromfield Gallery in Boston’s South End. The series is curated by Michael Rosenstein.
