Over the past decade, Cass McCombs has established himself as a premier songwriter in a career that has twisted and turned from style to subject, both between records and within them. His new record, Mangy Love, ventures into the realms of experimental soul, twisted psychedelia, and straight-up rock, resulting in a sound that articulates his live show better than ever. Thematically, it’s darker, tackling heavy issues through McCombs’s uniquely cracked lens of often hilarious lyrical wit with subtlety. The influences of hip-hop and Beat poetry have never been more evident, with several songs employing a speech style and clever, fast-paced wordplay. There are guest appearances by many fellow musicians, ranging from Angel Olsen to Blake Mills, under the production of veteran Rob Schnapf, and the overall result is his most immediate, upbeat record to date.

Delicate Steve is the brainchild of New Jersey-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steve Marion. SPIN has called his music “a kaleidoscope of bouncy pan-African polyrhythms and swooping six-string melodies, like the Dirty Projectors with guitars instead of singers.”
