Cottaging — “Arco Iris” & “Melted On The Rocks”

by

Shit-punk slime queens COTTAGING have once more breached the scaly surface. Down in Providence, a place whose mythic tenor they echo most rightly, these guys dig into the dirt in all kindsa ways (check out their deformed twin band UKIAH DRAG also—you know, like BASKET CASE). The latest recordings are collected together on a record with a great cover called AMYL BANSHEE 12″, with the solid-as-hell WHARF CAT RECORDS doing the releasing honors.

Dirge punk, less rhythm-oriented scuzzer post-punk, or even something like flanged scum might work when speaking of Cottaging. They’re a band who probably bridle at circuitous discussion (my specialty) though, so I’ll just get right to it. Nice slice of a record here. The two tracks that you can stream serve up the Cottaging I know and appreciate. “Arco Iris” delivers a direct punk jolt that is nearly obscured by a negative swirl of guitars and effects-laden vocal carve. “Melted On The Rocks” is a fitting title for a song that feels like a filthy slow descent, a late ’80s underground oozing. Definitely a downward spiral of a song. Next time you’re about to get your skull fucked, maybe you’ll hear this in the background? Cottaging visits Boston far too irregularly; hopefully we can help alleviate the situation before rot sets in. Oh well, I guess it’s already set in. But still. Oh look, actually, the band is going on tour. And, not coming to Boston. Yeah.
