The Coneheads — L.P.1. aka “14 Year Old High School PC-Fascist Hype Lords Rip Off Devo for the Sake of Extorting $$$ from Helpless Impressionable Midwestern Internet Peoplepunks L.P.”

Damn. This band rules so much. Originally I discovered them through their glue-sniffing Northwest Indiana punk brethren BIG ZIT. Totally punk and totally weird at the same time. DEVO is an obvious band familiar, but there’ve been many bands since those Ohio freaks exploded the scene whose sounds ooze out of these electronic punk spasms made by THE CONEHEADS (GERTY FARISH, JAY REATARD, PARASITES OF THE WESTERN WORLD, and THE GIRLS and (NEW ENGLAND) PATRIOTS, the latter two of Boston, to name a few).

But these Indiana people do it like only they can do it. Just like all those bands I just mentioned did it like only they could do it. THE CONEHEADS are making some really interesting punk in 2015. It keeps you guessing, and the band is tight as hell, which isn’t something I get to say about the punk I usually end up standing behind. It’s very true here though. Managing that feat of bringing it as a punk band and a post-punk band at the same time, THE CONEHEADS do not take themselves too seriously. It would seem that they approach their music seriously, though, even as the vocals occasionally stray from a nasal punk delivery on into more “robotic” territory.

L.P.1. aka “14 Year Old High School PC-Fascist Hype Lords Rip Off Devo for the Sake of Extorting $$$ from Helpless Impressionable Midwestern Internet Peoplepunks L.P.” came out earlier this year, just one of a rash of releases by THE CONEHEADS in the last eight months. These guys are simply doing their thing, and I like it. “Waste of Space” is a top performer. Reatard vibes in some of the chord changes with a great “ooh ooh”–type of section and a demanding early rock ’n’ roll synth stab. “Big City Baby” represents a different sound of sorts, a punk rock ’n’ roll that makes me think of ALTERNATIVE TELEVISION or something. The weird punk is very special to me and always has been. Out on Erste Theke Tontraeger, a label out of Tübingen, Germany. Stay weird you CONEHEADS . . . and you gotta play Hassle Fest 7, ’kay?
