Happy Wednesday, y’all! Celebrate arguably the dullest day of the week with this sweet little smut-nugget from Guerilla Toss. “Operate” live at Hassle fest 5!! Unlike most NSFW-labeled material, this video will actually feed your brain with dueling guitars that sound like violent geniuses in debate, gulping rhythms that oscillate between intuitive and mind-bending, and a synth that boils through the center like a cauldron stirred by god knows what alchemy. Guerilla Toss makes some of the most innovative music around, and it’s not just weird; it’s smart. They craft hooks as addictive as any billboard artist, and they do it in a language they make up on the spot. Guerilla Toss finds their way into your head by doing what you’re not supposed to do to a guitar, by tricking you, by abusing your ears a little bit, all the while maintaining this seductive chuckling grin. I imagine the same sort of intelligence is required of dudes in advertising, that ability to seduce and create an original language that is seductive in itself. Thank God they’re not in advertising. This is way more productive. They’re creating music that, weird as it may be, is strangely accessible, not Top 40’s accessible (is that even accessibility?), but inviting and intimate. Guerilla Toss’ music is an early shriek in a hopefully fruitful dialogue between noise/punk music, and hip-hop/dance (see “Sugar Better” on Gay Disco).
