If the oxymoronic descriptor “experimental traditional” piques your interest, you’ll want to head to the Midway Café tonight for this show.
Wendy Alembic works with her American-traditional-type voice, a loop machine, and guitar to make songs that start poppy and then get weird without you even realizing it. Upright bass plus resonator guitar is usually a recipe for bluegrass, but in the hands of Brittany Karlson, the traditional instruments become tools for dissonance. As Secret Rodg, Matt Delligatti’s Chet Baker–esque voice and gentle guitar pluckings are evocative and a little creepy.
All three musicians usually play traditional-traditional music, so don’t miss this chance to hear their weird sides.
