In celebration of the cinematography of Vilmos Zsigmond, the Brattle is showing this biopic of a fictional rock star whose self-destructive behavior provides an escape from the constant pressures of her career and the demands of her ruthless business manager. Starring Bette Midler and Harry Dean Stanton (of Twin Peaks fame and of being generally amazing), the story is loosely based on the life of singer Janis Joplin, so please don’t go to this one expecting a happy ending but do go to it for it’s beautiful scenes, iconic soundtrack, and brilliant performances.
