The Battle of Algiers

Fri, Jan 13 2017 5:00 pm - 7:05 pm

$11

Bombs going off in public places, the use of torture to gain information, and a stark divide between an Arab population and their Eurocentric neighbors. I’m not talking about modern news headlines; this is The Battle of Algiers, the film which brought harsh realism to the Algerian War of the 1950s and early 60s. With a nationalist movement seeking full independence from France, Algeria becomes a full on war zone that soon shreds the social fabric of the North African colony, causing both sides to use increasingly extreme measures in pursuit of their goals. Shot on location not long after the formal war ended, the film feels like a first rate documentary of both then and now.
