Featuring an excellent ensemble cast and Joss Whedon’s signature rat-a-tat writing, SERENITY came out of nowhere a decade ago as an endlessly enjoyable feature film sequel to the televised space western FIRELY which ended a few years prior. Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads a group of smugglers aboard the spaceship Serenity where the bottom line is cash and everything else comes second. That is until one of the crew member’s sister, River (Summer Glau), hitches a ride. Pursued by an amoral and lethal secret agent (Chiwetel Ejiofor doing a 180 from his role in 12 YEARS A SLAVE) in order reclaim her superhuman abilities for government use, the crew of the Serenity go through one trial after another to keep River safe in a fucking awesome sci-fi adventure with only a quarter of the budget of Hollywood blockbusters. In addition to witnessing cinematic gold, the proceeds from the 10th anniversary screening will also go toward Whedon’s charity of choice, Equality Now, a human rights group working to end violence against women across the globe.
