Prints and Drawings by John Steward Walsh an exhibition of over 50 monotype prints, drawings and silkscreens exploring the somatic and transcendent aspects of the human head will be on display at the Piano Craft Gallery from January 9 to 31 with a reception Sunday, the 11th from 3-5pm.

Walsh’s work surveys three decades of creative examination of the human head and the figure. “It began to dominate my work after a period of painting figures of Eros as the subject” states Walsh. “It is my intention to create images which have a strong interior psychological intensity; the images are not autobiographical or self-portraits” expresses Walsh “The prints and drawings emerge through my experience as an artist and my strength as a draughtsman”

The works, measuring approximately 40 x 36 inches are printed in Walsh’s personal printing technique. Born out of the traditional silk screen process, Walsh’s method uses paper to transfer acrylic paint to the print paper, he then continues to paint with a brush directly on the print, often reapplying paint after layers have dried.

Walsh is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design where received BFA in painting and MAE in art education. He is also a grant recipient of the Artists Foundation Drawing Fellowship 1986.
