“The Harvard Ed Portal is proud to present Hoarder Vacui, a new exhibition featuring the works of Sage Schmett and Nick Rocco. Based on the term “horror vacui,” a Latin phrase meaning “fear of empty spaces,” Hoarder Vacui explores this approach within the context of our consumer-driven society and the desire to fill emptiness with material possessions. The artists, who are based in Allston-Brighton, explore different ways of interpreting the mental noise of living in a world inundated with advertising, by creating intimate spaces overflowing with visual information and nostalgic imagery.

Sage Schmett works mostly with cardboard, magazine pages, and other forms of recycled paper, utilizing collage and sculptural strategies to explore how we relate to the domestic spaces we inhabit, and the possessions with which we share those spaces. Nick Rocco’s work is a response to a culture that creates a sense of lacking which can only be relieved through constant accumulation. He aims to bring attention to this through dense landscapes of over stimulation.”
