In March 1967 Otto Piene and Aldo Tambellini inaugurated the Black Gate Theater in New York City with a double performance of Otto’s Proliferation of the Sun and Aldo’s Black Out. Following upon the success of the Black Gate Theater, Piene persuaded Westdeutscher Rundfunk television to permit them to produce a version of their multimedia theater in the Cologne Germany television studios. After shooting and editing for two days in August 1968, Black Gate Cologne was aired in January 1969.
The program for this evening features screenings of both the opening night at the Black Gate Theater and Black Gate Cologne. Aldo Tambellini recently rediscovered the film that he made of the opening night of the Black Gate Theater and consented for the Boston Cyberarts Gallery to screen the world premier of his 1967 film. This will be followed by a screening of Piene and Tambellini’s landmark television broadcast, the first television program engineered by artists, Black Gate Cologne. Joseph D. Ketner II will introduce the screenings.
