Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Mutu moved to the United States to study art and anthropology and has a studio in Brooklyn, NY. Her multimedia works use dreamlike and provocative imagery to explore issues of gender and sexism, race, (neo)colonialism, and rampant consumption. The unique mix of elements in her collages, videos, animations, sculptures, and installations, which often feature a sci-fi twist, places her among the vanguard of Afrofuturism in visual art.
Visiting artists of diverse backgrounds frequently join the MassArt community to give lectures, artist talks, gallery walkthroughs, panel discussions, and for residencies to make new work. These visiting artists often meet with students to give critiques and offer professional experience and advice, an invaluable tool for those about to embark on their own career in the arts.
The Adderley Lecture series was established in 1995 in memory of MassArt painting student Tyrone Maurice Adderley. The lecture series recognizes the achievements of outstanding artists, historians and educators from diverse cultural groups. Past Adderley lecturers have included Chakaia Booker, Melvin Edwards, Lorraine O’Grady, Alison Saar, Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, and Fred Wilson, among others.
