Directing giant Frank Capra takes a break from his good natured optimism and delves into his dark side with this morbid comedy about a pair of spinsters putting lonely old men to eternal rest. Cary Grant plays Mortimer Brewster, a prolific drama critic visiting the aunts who looked after him during childhood. But something is seriously off with the two sisters, namely that they indulge in poisoning geriatric gentlemen as a means of alleviating their depressing lives by cutting them from their mortal shackles. This revelation sets off a never-ending headache for Mortimer as he attempts to keep the murderers he adores from being discovered and arrested.
Screened as part of Science on Screen℠, the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s long running program on the cinematic presentation of science, technology, and medicine, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author of The Poisoner’s Handbook Deborah Blum will be on hand to present in depth knowledge on arsenic itself, the deadly toxin’s history as well as its current uses.
