2/5 [opening reception] Dead Animals (or the Curious Occurrence of Taxidermy in Contemporary Art) @ David Winton Bell Gallery 5:30pm FREE

Fri, Feb 5 2016 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm Free

David Winton Bell Gallery @ Brown University

This show explores the history of taxidermy culture, while reinforcing it as a craft that is being practices less and less. Natural history museums are moving away from using taxidermy as a way to display creatures, but at the same time, contemporary artists are taking on the practice in the form of sculpture.

One could say a taxidermied animal resembles death. But what inanimate artwork can resemble life more than the material that once encapsulated it?

The show is up at Brown University’s David Winton Bell Gallery from January 23rd to March 27th. Events occurring with the exhibition include the opening, two symposiums, and an artist talk.
