OH GOD THAT HEAD JUST CAME OUT OF NOWHERE. Jaws is still an iconic horror film, showing Spielberg’s extraordinary talent as a filmmaker in his capacity to create awe and fear—typically in the same scene. In part it’s Scheider’s movie, though, and he anchors a “blockbuster” that includes as many screams as subtle, funny human moments (“Hey honey, how was your day?”) We’re as invested in the people as we are the ridiculously big shark, and that’s what’s made it timeless. —Conor Crockford
