DESCRIPTION:Bread & Puppet returns to The Millspace in Newmarket\, NH on Saturday\, April 2nd with Finished Waiting\, a new show created this winter by B&P director\, Peter Schumann and the storied Vermont troupe of puppeteers\, carpenters\, bus drivers\, musicians\, dancers\, agitators and bread-bakers – many of whom do all of the above in the process of inventing Bread & Puppet’s aesthetically iconic and politically plainspoken shows and bringing them to audiences far and wide. \n    Finished Waiting is a show for this moment of political\, social\, ecological and epidemiological rupture and uncertainty\, a moment in which many feel the seduction of a stance of waiting: waiting for the pandemic to be over\, for better leaders to be elected\, for actions to be taken by the powerful to respond to ecological catastrophe\, for families to be reunited or seemingly eternal wars to end. \n     What do we do and where do we go when we’re finished waiting? What transformations might be possible in our lives and in our politics if we stopped waiting for them to change\, or for others to change first? How is it possible to recognize the moment in which we can set waiting aside and set out toward something – and\, as importantly\, how can we recognize the moment in which we can\, at last\, lay aside cherished innocences or bootless hopes\, see what is for what it is\, and act accordingly? How can it become possible for us to arise together and promote the arising of new worlds of collective possibility through collective uprising? \n    Bread & Puppet promotes such practices of rising in the provocative terms of “Domestic Resurrection” – under the banner of which aesthetic and spiritual sublimity are not at odds with political stridency and the simple\, sustaining rhythms of household chores. \nIn Finished Waiting\, Bread & Puppet invites audiences throughout the Northeast to harken to these practices of uprising\, and take heart from them – as we all participate in the satisfaction of another\, equally fundamental kind of waiting: the waiting for spring’s arrival after a long winter. With this show\, Bread & Puppet seems to call on us to recognize how nature itself shows us what is possible – what can arise – when we abandon waiting and embrace transformation. \nAccording to Schumann the show will star “the clock and its customers\, skies\, cities\, mountains\, forward dancers\, backward dancers\, a stop officer\, and an eye divinity who teaches seeing to non-suspecting eyes.” \nAfter the performance Bread & Puppet will serve its free sourdough rye bread with aioli\, and Bread & Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books\, posters\, postcards\, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainability and the Arts
DESCRIPTION:With JoAnn Chase\, (COM ’85) Director\, American Indian Environmental Office\, Office of International and Tribal Affairs \nJoAnn Chase is a citizen of the Mandan\, Hidatsa\, and Arikara Indian Nation and was born and raised on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in central North Dakota. In addition to her work in the EPA\, JoAnn has partnered with music icon Nona Hendryx and social justice innovator Makani Themba to launch SisterSMATR.org (Science\, Math\, Art\, Technology\, Robotics) which leverages art and community to close the gender gap in science and technology primarily with young women of color. Previously\, JoAnn served as the Executive Director of the National Congress of American Indians\, this country’s oldest and largest national Indian membership organization. She was also the Director of the National Network of Grantmakers. JoAnn has a law degree from the University of New Mexico Law School and a baccalaureate in film theory and criticism from Boston University.

DESCRIPTION:Bleep Blorp 2022 is a festival of synthesizer music that will be held at Stonehill College on March 26th\, 2022. This year’s guest artist is Stephanie Vasko. The keynote and live performances will be featured in the Martin Institute Auditorium. The festival will also feature a video gallery in the Carole Calo in Cushing Martin. Admission is free for performers\, selected artists\, as well as faculty\, staff\, and students of Stonehill College. Admission for others will be $5. Attendees will be required to follow Stonehill College’s Visitor and Guest Protocols. \nSchedule:\n4 P.M. Keynote: Stephanie Vasko\, “Synthesizing the Sound of Space” \nAbout Dr. Vasko\nDr. Vasko is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar who creates short\, experimental sound pieces through combining and layering field recordings\, software synthesis\, tape loops\, and circuit bending. \nAs guest artist\, Dr. Vasko will be delivering the festival’s keynote lecture\, “Synthesizing the Sound of Space.” This lecture chronicles Vasko’s digital humanities project of the same name. The project explores how the development of the silicon transistor has shaped the ways in which the sounds of space are recorded and created. Initial work during the pilot year of this project has focused on archival and online research\, creating a beta version of a website\, and developing an open-source lesson plan to teach about how to synthesize your own space sounds. This keynote will cover an introduction to this project and deep dive into the sound creation activity\, including addressing accessibility concerns\, sound samples\, and a tools/platforms comparison. \nHer performance\, Layers\, at the end of the Bleep/Blorp 2022 will feature patches created using VCV Rack\, sound samples\, and tape loops. \nPerformances:\n5 P.M.
