DESCRIPTION:SAMMUS (Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo) is an Ithaca-raised\, Philadelphia-based rap artist\, producer\, and PhD student in the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University. Known as much for her rousing stage presence as she is for her prowess as a beatmaker and lyricist\, Sammus has spent the past several years cultivating a strong following of activists\, hip hop heads\, punks\, and self-identified nerds and geeks\, among others. As noted by the Los Angeles Times\, Sammus “has a gift for getting a message across.” Having recently made her Don Giovanni debut (while remaining tied to NuBlack Music Group)\, she is poised to cement herself as an artist who consistently thinks outside boxes and dances across lines (and does other neat things with geometrical figures). \nIn addition to managing a full-time music career\, Enongo has spent the past eight years as a public-school and college level educator. After graduating from Cornell University in 2008 with a double BA in Sociology and Science & Technology Studies\, she was accepted into the national teaching program Teach for America and placed in Houston Texas\, where she taught elementary math and science between 2008 to 2010. In the fall semester of 2011 she returned to Cornell as a PhD candidate to pursue an interest a wide array of sound studies topics\, including sound and gaming as well as the identity politics of community studios. As an academic in training and very-vocal feminist\, Enongo has produced articles for publications such as Bitch\, For Harriet\, Sounding Out!\, and The Mary Sue related to issues of race\, hip-hop\, gaming\, and feminism. \nALL AGES.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Non-Event in conjunction with the Yard… a quadruple bill of experimental and improvised music on the sixth floor of the John Hancock Tower. All Ages. \nBYRON WESTBROOK has been presenting experimental sound work internationally in contemporary music and art venues since 2008. His recorded releases on Umor Rex\, Root Strata and Hands in the Dark take a sculptural approach to electronic composition shaped by visual art studies and a history of working with multi-channel sound installation. Recent projects have included a commission for the Walker Art Center\, performances at MoMA PS1\, Akousma Festival\, Berlin Atonal and residencies with ISSUE Project Room\, EMS Stockholm\, Civitella Ranieri Foundation and Banff Centre for the Arts. A new cassette/digital release Voice Damage\, is out March 2019 on Psychic Troubles Tapes. Westbrook is currently based in Los Angeles. \nGUDINNI CORTINA is a media artist\, based in México. Cortina uses different approaches to transform space such as live sound performances\, photography and installation. ANNE-F JACQUES is a sound artist based in Montreal\, Canada. She is interested in amplification\, oblique interactions between materials and construction of various contraptions and idiosyncratic systems. Her particular focus is on low technology\, trivial objects and unpolished sounds. She has presented several sound installations and live performances in South and North America\, Europe and Japan. Anne-F is also involved with Crustacés Tapes\, a postal sound distribution project. Together Cortina and Jacques use various idiosyncratic implements and contraptions to explore stillness\, fractures and friction through sound. This will be the last show of their first tour as a duo. \nSOUND OF THE MOUNTAIN is a Montreal-based duo featuring the hollowed-out sounds of Elizabeth Millar and Craig Pedersen on amplified clarinet and trumpet\, Sound of the Mountain comes from a strong history of improvisation and extended performance techniques\, offering their audience long-form deep listening experiences through the sculpting of vitalized breath. \nANIMAL HOSPITAL is often Kevin alone constructing music from scratch w/ an array of sounds containing enough parts to employ – at times – many musicians referencing many familiar aspects of rock and pop as well as more conceptual perceptions of what people consider music. As of 2011\, Animal Hospital has explored new avenues for live performance in large ensemble formats and sound installation.

DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Brooklyn’s DIY scene and inspired by the chaos of New York City\, A Deer A Horse has grown into a relentless touring act over the years\, clocking in over 200 shows across the country\, and garnering a nod by Audiofemme as one of the hardest working touring bands in the US. \nFormed by college classmates Rebecca Satellite (vocals/guitar) and Angela Phillips (bass/vocals)\, the band came into its own with the addition of drummer Dylan Teggart\, as the thundering rhythm section began to channel the weight of their lyrical content. \nTheir 2017 EP\, Backswimmer\, drew praise from the AV Club\, which compared the unlikely marriage of doom metal dirges with vocal earworms to “the Melvins turning in a pop song\, finding ways to keep a hook running through a song that’s otherwise grim and sludgy.” \nIn 2018\, A Deer A Horse released singles “Cold Shoulder” and “Double Wide”\, recorded at Silver Cord Studio\, home-base of French metal pioneers\, Gojira. The band is showing no signs of letting up their heavy touring schedule\, and are in post-production on their as-yet-unannounced album. \nA Deer A Horse will be joined by local legends Tiger Bomb and cigarette punk-rockers Billy Midol. \nALL AGES.

DESCRIPTION:Looking for a quick inspiration burst for your Wednesday afternoon? Join the staff of MIT’s List Visual Arts Center for an hour long sketch-session! A fun new way to interact with the sculptures of featured artist Kathleen Ryan\, this quick event calls for a brief walk through tour and a little creativity. \nKathleen Ryan’s sculpture exhibit Cultivator features a number of her grand scale sculptures\, often created from industrial materials such as cement or wrought iron. Most of the sculptures in the collection play with scale\, and how to make something small into something surprising.
