SUMMARY:The Heart is a Bell: Iva Bittova with the MIT Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:MIT Sounding presents: The Heart is a Bell: Iva Bittova with the MIT Symphony Orchestra @\nMIT Kresge Auditorium\, 8 pm \nThe MIT Symphony Orchestra (MITSO) begins its 2019-20 season with music inspired by Czech folk music. But instead of the often-played symphonic fare from Czech composers like Dvořák or Smetana\, The Heart is a Bell: Iva Bittová with the MIT Symphony presents compositions by twentieth-century Czech women: the US premiere of Bittová’s Zvon\, and the Suita Rustica by Vítězslava Kaprálová. The October 10th program also includes Frog’s Eye\, by Evan Ziporyn\, faculty director of the MIT Center for Art\, Science & Technology (CAST) and acting director of MITSO this season. \nAlthough they were created 75 years apart\, Suita Rustica and Zvon both offer a decidedly modern take on Czech folk music. Zvon in particular contextualizes Czech folk traditions in a modern context\, with an ensemble that includes Bittová’s unique solo voice and a jazz combo featuring bassist and MIT Affiliated Artist Keala Keumeheiwa. \nBittová is a frequent musical collaborator at MIT who has performed with a variety of groups\, including the improvisational trio EVIYAN (with Gyan Riley and Ziporyn)\, the Festival Jazz Ensemble and with Pilobolus Dance\, for MIT One World. \nKnown for her musical fluidity and riveting performances\, the former actress is adept at culling diverse musical languages\, while retaining their authenticity. “Her music is a full reflection of who she is\,” says Ziporyn. “She comes from a family of traditional musicians\, plays jazz\, has a degree in early music; she’s played Donna Elvira  in Mozart’s Don Giovanni \, performed Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire\, Berio’s Folk songs and Schnittke Faustus Cantata. And in all of these contexts\, she sounds inimitably like herself.” \nBittová\, says Ziporyn\, brings a singularly eclectic approach to music-making\, and an opportunity to expand MITSO’s musical repertoire as only she can.

SUMMARY:Spider Baby
DESCRIPTION:In Tribute to Sid Haig! \nIt was with sadness that we learned of the passing of the great underground character actor Sid Haig this past week. Haig was a remarkably charismatic presence and stole scenes in pretty much everything that he appeared in. Though most memorable for a contemporary audience as the repugnant Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses\, The Devil’s Rejects\, and 3 from Hell\, Haig was a reliable presence in the exploitation films of the 1970s (Foxy Brown\, Coffy\, The Big Bird Cage) and served as the villain-of-the-week on a multitude of 80s TV shows. \nIn SPIDER BABY\, Haig plays one of a trio of siblings – the tragic and dangerous results of a genetic disorder that causes them to mentally and physically regress down the evolutionary ladder – watched over by a protective (but not protective enough) servant (Chaney). When a cadre of greedy relatives show up to try and take control of the family fortune all hell breaks loose. A seedy\, blackly comic schlock masterpiece\, Jack Hill’s SPIDER BABY is over-the-top and off-the-rails weird. It also contains too many trigger warnings to properly list here so\, please consider yourself warned. \nSPIDER BABY • 1967 • dir Jack Hill w/Sid Haig\, Lon Chaney Jr.\, Carol Ohmart\, Quinn K. Redeker\, Quinn Redeker\, Jill Banner • 81 min • DCP \nTrailer: https://youtu.be/oo46XEf8AC0

SUMMARY:T. Akiyama-J Krausbauer duo/Kaori Suzuki/ Quits/eVICshen
DESCRIPTION:Come to this great show of four great acts!\n#1. TETUZI AKIYAMA-JOHN KRAUSBAUER DUO (Japan/California)\nTetuzi Akiyama (Tokyo\, Japan)\nAkiyama is primarily recognized for his work in the field of improvisatory music. An instrument-builder\, guitarist\, electronic musician\, and organizer of monthly improv meetings at Tokyo’s Off Site\, Akiyama has built a decades-long reputation as a highly inventive musician in the field of electro-acoustic music. On the acoustic guitar\, Akiyama is introspective. Each note on the crooked trail throbs with intention—charged by preceding silence. His electrified foray into boogie and blues may seem totally irreconcilable. But much like the late drone-blues master Junior Kimbrough\, or the Art Brut fiddler Henry Flynt\, Akiyama’s vision for boogie set its sights on a monistic devotion to an interminable groove. Through the distorted chug of his guitar emerges a powerful narcotic state hinting at the work of 60’s and 70’s minimalist pioneers but without a loss of vigor from the attendant over-intellectualization.\nJohn Krausbauer (Oakland\, CA)\n“Down\, down\, he swam till his arms and legs grew tired and hardly moved. He knew that he was deep. The pressure on his eardrums was a pain\, and there was a buzzing in his head. His endurance was faltering\, but he compelled his arms and legs to drive him deeper until his will snapped and the air drove from his lungs in a great explosive rush…This hurt was not death…Death did not hurt. It was life\, the pangs of life\, this awful\, suffocating feeling; it was the last blow life could deal him. His willful hands and feet began to beat and churn about\, spasmodically and feebly. He was too deep down. They could never bring him to the surface. He seemed floating languidly in a sea of dreamy vision. Colors and radiances surrounded him and bathed him and pervaded him.”\nLike Martin Eden’s final moments in Jack London’s eponymous first novel\, the music of John Krausbauer navigates a numinous crevice between physicality and annihilation. This is dangerous music—a pilgrimage through dolmens to be submerged in the warm catalepsia of trance minimalism but not before nearly drowning in the blistering liquid skree.\n#2 KAORI SUZUKI (Oakland CA)\n“one of the best academic composers in the country at generating long-form pieces that rivet and then blow your mind with a few scrupulously chosen tones and modulations…the results make you feel as if your ears have become op-art paintings and are somehow hypnotizing themselves”\n— Dave Segal\, The Stranger\n“Musicians such as Kaori Suzuki exist for the same reasons new religions do”\n— Inna Fable\, Boston Hassle\n#3 VICTORIA SHEN\nVictoria Shen is a noise musician\, visual artist\, and instrument-maker native to San Francisco but working out of New England.\nShen’s sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Shen’s music floods its location acting as a form of sculpture. Her music features analog modular synthesizers (Flower Electronics)\, contact microphones\, and other self-built electronics. These instruments are designed to electronically reproduce chaotic systems\, systems which are highly sensitive to small changes in their initial parameters. The resulting music eschews conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of the extreme textures and gestural tones.\nShen’s live video performances produces visual palimpsests and digital residues. Shen achieves this by using software she has authored in order to generate visuals combining real-time video with found footage thematically linked by sexuality\, violence\, and art history through a process of exaggeration/effacement.\nShen has performed solo across North America\, Japan\, Mexico\, and Europe as Victoria Shen and Evicshen and as half of the duo TRIM in North America and the UK. Some notable venues in which she has performed include Boston City Hall\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, ISSUE Project Room NY\, DOMMUNE Tokyo\, and Petreon Sculpture Park Cyprus. Shen has also been an artist in residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm Sweden\, WORM Rotterdam Netherlands\, and Kurimanzutto New York.\n#4 CHRIS STRUNK\nCHRIS STRUNK is a Boston based percussionist and drummer. His solo work focuses on cymbal overtones\, friction\, and the vibration and rattle of non traditional objects used as percussion instruments. He has been an active show promoter and musician in the Boston area for the past sixteen years. He has been active in many groups such as Los Condenados\, Avoidance\, Taps\, Phantom Rides\, Sheer Anxiety\, Conversions\, Baja Blatz\, Sleeper Cell\, and many more. His first full length cd No Chart Could Map My Constellations is soon forthcoming on the newly minted\, Philadelphia based label Killing Time Between the Ice Ages.

We ask that everyone who attends and plays here be aware of the language they use and how it might affect others; racist\, sexist\, heterosexist\, transphobic\, ableist\, or otherwise oppressive attitudes are not welcome. Please hold each other accountable so that all who come to the DC feel supported and\nwelcome. \n**DAY 3 @ CCC**\nGym is wheelchair accessible but restrooms in building are not. We’re looking into what are the options immediately around the area. \nSheer Queer Fest is an annual queer music fest in Boston. We seek to showcase the voices and work of queer folk who create loud\, aggressive\, experimental\, and angry music that challenge racism\, transphobia\, ableism\, classism\, xenophobia\, misogyny\, and other forms of oppression. \nFunds raised by this fest are used to support our community members and the efforts by activists or organizations to address the issues our intersecting communities face. We hope to build a community centered in radical action to reclaim space in radical/DIY spaces to celebrate all forms of queerness.
