Her LA parties are well known for bringing together a wide array of experimental and dance music sounds: from techno\, electro and regional club music variants\, through to more experimental styles like breakcore\, speedcore and IDM. This variety can be often heard in her DJ sets\, which run the gamut between those styles and often weave seemingly disparate styles together in a fluid and dancefloor-focused manner. \nFInal Object (dj set! BOSTON)\nhttps://soundcloud.com/final-object\nFinal Object (Emma) is well known throughout Boston for her incredible techno live PAs. However\, it was her summer 2019 mix (“Humanize Something Free Of Error”) which caught us by surprise. This dj mix brought together expertly selected tunes across a wide range of styles: Deep Detroit Techno\, Kuduro\, Industrial Hardcore\, Oldskool Jungle\, and Experimental Club to name a few. It showed an exquisite ear for challenging yet still dancefloor-ready sounds\, well beyond the purview of the average Boston DJ. He is part of a dynamic new generation of improvisers in traversing a wide spectrum of genres and styles including experimental\, jazz\, noise\, metal and more. Graham has appeared on over 30 recordings\, ranging in style from contemporary classical\, metal\, and jazz. He has performed or recorded with a diverse group of musicians\, including Roger Turner\, Kayo Dot\, The Flying Luttenbachers\, Rakalam Moses\, Daughters\, Jim Hobbs\, Erase Errata\, Thoughtstreams\, and Raqib Hassan. He is currently a member of the Para Quintet\, Rock Flint Contemporary Ensemble\, Wild May\, Grizzler\, Construction Party\, and Equal Time. He is the founder of the Rock Flint Artists Retreat\, and has appeared at numerous festivals including High Zero\, Full Force (curated by John Zorn)\, Vision Festival\, and The Wire’s Adventures in Modern Music festival. \nKATE VILLAGE\, described as a surfer shooting the curl in a wave of feedback\, fights her Guild T-50 guitar in the endless battle between human and electronics. She has ridden the texture/noise continuum for the past 25+ years in rock bands and improv/noise configurations. DESCRIPTION:The Black Studies Reading Room:\n“Can you be Black and Look at this?” \n“Can you Be Black and Look at This?” Poet Elizabeth Alexander asked this question in 1994 with the video recording of Rodney King’s beating lodged in her mind. At the Black Studies Reading Room on November 14th\, we’ll ask the same question of Sanford Biggers’ difficult BAM series\, in which the artist uses sculpture and video to memorialize black victims of police violence. What does it mean to be black and live with the memory bank of black suffering in American media and culture? What options does contemporary art give us\, and what new problems does it pose? \nOur study session will include a tour of Biggers’ installation\, followed by a group discussion in Alpha’s Bet Is Not Over Yet\, a reading space curated by contemporary artists Steffani Jemison and Jamal Cyrus\, and inspired by the legacy of black radical politics and publishing.
