SUMMARY:DEAR SO-AND-SO at THE DISTILLERY GALLERY
DESCRIPTION:“Dear So-and-So is an exhibition that celebrates collaboration in an innovative way. Co-curators Mary Lewey and Helen Popinchalk selected a group of artists working in a variety of mediums to choose an artist pen pal. Each artist has worked on a group of pieces before handing them off to their collaborator. This long-distance back-and-forth is documented at each step as the works progress and develop. Dear So-and-So features the finished collaborations between each artist duo. \nThis kind of call and response collaboration demands lots of trust and (probably) some amount of humility! \nArtists and partners include: \nAllison Tanenhaus & David Bojay\nAndy Li & Chelsea Teta\nCicely Carew & Tolani Lawrence-Lightfoot\nCyrille Conan & Kenji Nakayama\nDavid Borden & Christian Borden\nJack Byers & HAMER\nJay LaCouture & John Rainis\nJennifer Lamontagne & Bri Custer\nJoe Banda & Jake Cassevoy\nMary Lewey & Helen Popinchalk\nSarah Trahan & Andrew Sliwinski\nTim Hansen & Conny Goelz Schmitt\nJohn Skibo & Chloe Isadora Reison \nOn view: November 25 – December 29\, 2019 \nOpening reception: Saturday\, December 7\, 7 – 10 PM” \n  \n(Text and images from distillerygallery.com)

SUMMARY:Robyn Hitchcock
DESCRIPTION:City Winery Boston Presents\nRobyn Hitchcock \n5:00pm doors / 7:00pm show / $25-$35 \nTickets: http://bit.ly/RobynHitchcockBOS112419 \nRobyn Hitchcock is one of England’s most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet\, talented guitarist\, cult artist and musician’s musician\, Hitchcock is among alternative rock’s father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration). \nSince founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976\, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums as well as starred in ‘Storefront Hitchcock’ an in concert film recorded in New York and directed by Jonathan Demme. \nBlending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism\, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to’. His most recent album is self-titled and marks his 21st release as a solo artist. Out on April 21 2017\, the album is produced by Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs). Hitchcock describes it as a “ecstatic work of negativity with nary a dreary groove.” \nIt has received rave reviews from UNCUT\, Rolling Stone\, Paste\, Tidal and more. \n“A gifted melodist\, Hitchcock nests engaging lyrics in some of the most bracing\, rainbow-hued pop this side of Revolver. He wrests inspiration not from ordinary life but from extraordinary imaginings…” – Rolling Stone \n“These 10 gems slither\, rock\, roll\, glide and shapeshift\, coalescing around Hitchcock’s typically anxious\, strained but striking and immediately identifiable vocals.” – American Songwriter\n“Beloved of everyone from Led Zeppelin to REM\, Hitchcock has only enhanced his status with this wonderful outing.” – Hot Press \n“Witty\, moving and seriously catchy\, Robyn Hitchcock is a glorious return for a man who wasn’t really gone in the first place.” – Paste Magazine

SUMMARY:NEW IKEBANA AT PRACTICE SPACE
DESCRIPTION:“Now\, a generation of young artists are reinterpreting ikebana based on the practice’s core principles\, rather than its traditional mores. In doing so\, they are making us reconsider an old art form — and what it has to say about nature.” \n-The Rise of Modern Ikebana \n  \nFrom 11/19 t0 11/25\, Helen Singh-Miller’s MassArt students will be showing their interpretations of Ikebana\, or “making flowers alive\,” the ancient Japanese practice of flower arrangement.  Visit Practice Space in Inman to learn more about the students\, their pieces\, and how they interpret space and nature through this revitalized discipline. \n  \n(featured work: ‘Beautiful Death’.  Melvin Rosario. 2019.)

SUMMARY:Data Dreams #1: Akua\, Aura T-09\, Final Object & Dev/Chron
DESCRIPTION:** DATA DREAMS #1 ** \nTECHNO // ACID // HARDCORE // BREAKBEATS // JUNGLE // RAVE // NO FUTURE \nwith: \nAkua (Discwoman\, NYC)\nhttp://www.discwoman.com/mixes/akua\nhttps://soundcloud.com/akua_b\nWith a deep knowledge of both classic 90s tracks and modern selections\, Akua has proved she’s not afraid to redefine techno on her own terms. The Ghanaian-American DJ has cultivated a sound that reflects her passion for research and recontextualization\, infusing old-school tracks and techniques with a vision of future dancefloors. A Discwoman affiliate\, she organizes events and regularly graces the decks at NYC haunts Bossa Nova Civic Club and Nowadays. She’s also taken her sound to packed dance floors in cities across North America\, and in 2019 hopped across the pond to present her hyper-charged selections to European crowds with debuts on Boiler Room Utrecht\, plus shows at Saule and De School. Her mixes have received praise from Resident Advisor and Crack Magazine\, and she recently was tapped to do a summer residency on Rinse FM. This is her first set in Boston in over a year\, and we can’t wait to hear what she has in store for us. \nAura T-09 (Dublab\, Hyped On Experience\, LOS ANGELES)\nhttps://soundcloud.com/aurat09\nThough originally known best in LA as a graphic designer and event organizer\, Aura T-09 (Marci Pinna) has really picked up speed DJ’ing the past few years\, running a consistently excellent radio show on Dublab and playing various style sets throughout the city. Her LA parties are well known for bringing together a wide array of experimental and dance music sounds: from techno\, electro and regional club music variants\, through to more experimental styles like breakcore\, speedcore and IDM. This variety can be often heard in her DJ sets\, which run the gamut between those styles and often weave seemingly disparate styles together in a fluid and dancefloor-focused manner. \nFInal Object (dj set! BOSTON)\nhttps://soundcloud.com/final-object\nFinal Object (Emma) is well known throughout Boston for her incredible techno live PAs. However\, it was her summer 2019 mix (“Humanize Something Free Of Error”) which caught us by surprise. This dj mix brought together expertly selected tunes across a wide range of styles: Deep Detroit Techno\, Kuduro\, Industrial Hardcore\, Oldskool Jungle\, and Experimental Club to name a few. It showed an exquisite ear for challenging yet still dancefloor-ready sounds\, well beyond the purview of the average Boston DJ. Luckily for us\, Final Object has agreed to channel some of these styles into a special DJ set for the night. \nDev / Chron (Residents DEV/NULL b2b XEN CHRON – BOSTON)\nhttps://soundcloud.com/devnull-dj\nhttps://soundcloud.com/cleamy\nResident Data Dreamers & friends for a quarter century\, teaming up after all these years for some opening b2b stuff. Thousands of records collected\, gigabytes of mp3s traded\, and far too many hours of nerdy in-depth music discussion over the past several decades has all lead up to this: two old guys arguing over which techno track to play next ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ \nVisuals by Da Xu \n$12 advance tickets / $more at the door \nRESPECT YOURSELF / RESPECT OTHERS & THE SPACE / PLEASE DON’T BE A JERK OR YOU GOTTA GO!
