SUMMARY:Opening Reception for DOT NOW
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition:\n    Inspired by requests from our visitors to highlight more local artists\, Dot Now presents artworks made by artists living and/or working in our neighborhood of Dorchester. The exhibition seeks to foster a stronger sense of community between artists in the area and UMass Boston while celebrating their work within the Greater Boston Area. Dot Now gathers a set of intergenerational artists who are working in a variety of media\, connected through their locale and shared social concerns\, but distinctive in their artistic practices and personal narratives. Supporting programming to be announced in the coming weeks will look at the ways in which artists in Dorchester are self-organizing to support and sustain the arts in their community by creating spaces\, discourses\, and contexts for their work and that of their peers. The artists that we have worked with during the development of this exhibition have proven to be closely interconnected\, with many artists supporting one another’s work through events\, studio programs\, and exhibitions. \nKnown somewhat ironically as “The Dot\,” Dorchester is Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood. The borough’s complex demographics\, with a mixture of identities and international backgrounds intrinsically influenced our selection of artworks for Dot Now. African Americans make up the largest segment of the population of Dorchester by race (43% as of 2010)\, alongside prominent Vietnamese\, Caribbean\, and Latinx communities. The complexity of the neighborhood has led to an intersectional group of artists. For this reasons\, the exhibition does not attempt to locate a single take on what it means to be an artist based in Dorchester\, nor is it meant to act as a definitive gathering of different practices or trends taking place in the area. Instead\, we have chosen to present a broad variety of artworks and artists with similarly diverse perspectives and techniques. Through their practices\, these artists confront issues such as identity politics\, globalism\, and social practice\, among others. \nIn an homage to her grandmother\, Suzie “Cookie” Smith’s sculpture Cara’s House renders a model of a proposed cultural center that Smith envisions founding in the home of her grandmother that Smith’s mother now owns. Located in Hayneville\, Alabama\, her home sits on a parcel of cleared land that is located adjacent to her sister\, Rosie Steele’s farm. This is of historical significance because this land is located on the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. On March 22\, 1965 this land served as Campsite #2 for marchers walking 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery Alabama\, a protest that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year\, upholding racial minorities’ constitutional right to vote under the 14th Amendment. Local artist and designer\, Aiden Nguyen\, will present the full volume of the series of zines entitled Vănguard\, a project he co-founded with Thanh Mai. The collaborators developed the zine to create a safe platform for the visibility and individuality of self-identified lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender/trans*\, and queer (LGBTQ) artists and writers in Vietnam and across the Vietnamese diaspora. In two new projects by Andrew Mowbray\, the artist sources materials from Dorchester Bay and his expansive collection of milk-crates to discuss issues of locality\, utility\, and design. This includes an architectural intervention stretching from floor to ceiling in the gallery that will tell a partial history of sixty years of milk-crate design. In another new installation entitled Make a Wish for Dorchester\, Joanna Tam will share wishes from Dorchester residents\, allowing visitors to share their thoughts on how to create a better neighborhood for themselves and others. We will also be including a portrait by the youngest artist to ever show at University Hall Gallery\, Deandra Shannon Spence\, who is a current student at the Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy\, a tuition free charter public school located in Fields Corner. These projects and others will be complimented by programs that will activate the space\, allow for performance based works\, and help contextualize the exhibition within the art scene of Dorchester. \nThere are several arts organizations\, institutions\, and studios that have both public and private facing programs in Dorchester whom we interfaced with during the development of this exhibition\, including the Dorchester Arts Projects\, Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4SI)\, the African Winter Studio\, Humphrey Street Studios\, Pearl Street Studios\, and the Strand Theater. We would like to thank them as well as the many artists\, curators\, and residents that we met with during the development of this exhibition who continue to champion and sustain the arts in Dorchester. \nDot Now is made possible with generous support from the Paul Hayes Tucker Fund\, a gift from The Paul and Edith Babson Foundation\, and in kind support from the College of Liberal Arts at UMass Boston. \n\nArtists include:\nMarlon Forrester\, Rixy Fz\, Zach Horn\, Andrew Mowbray\, Ngoc-Tran Vu\, Aiden Nguyen of Vănguard\, Cristi Rinklin\, Suzie “Cookie” Smith\, Deandra Shannon Spence\, Joanna Tam\, Jamal Thorne\, and Joe Wardwell\n\nText and image from https://mailchi.mp/0795988e9126/dot-now-111819031319 \nFeature image: Jamal Thorne\, Untitled #22\, mixed media on paper

SUMMARY:Class Warfare: The Future of Left Politics
DESCRIPTION:RSVP>> http://bit.ly/rsvpharvardleft\nDonate>> http://bit.ly/donateharvardleft \nIn 1912\, Harvard armed its students to break a strike\, using the motto “Defend Your Class.” On January 28\, 2020\, prominent progressives will gather at Harvard to discuss the past\, present\, and future of class struggle\, and to envision the leftist movement that will arise from it. The 2020 primary is shaping up to be a referendum on the Democratic party\, an ideological battle between the traditional\, Biden-led wing of status quo politics and an emerging faction led by calls for the political revolution of Bernie Sanders. But the primary\, like the 2020 election at large\, is only the beginning. \nJoin us from 6-8pm to hear from two high-profile panels. The first\, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised\,” features Krystal Ball (The Hill\, Rising)\, Meagan Day (Jacobin)\, Katie Halper (Rolling Stone\, Useful Idiots)\, and Nomiki Konst (The Young Turks). The second\, “Battle for the Soul of the Democratic Party\,” includes Dr. Cornel West (philosopher\, author\, Harvard professor)\, Michael Brooks (The Michael Brooks Show)\, Phillip Agnew (Bernie 2020 national surrogate)\, and Esha Krishnaswamy (activist and host of historic.ly). \nThis conference is free and open to the public. Seats are first come first served. Children under the age of 18 are allowed but MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:MAGNUS JOHNSTONE - MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION: SELECTED WORKS 1984-2011 AT THE WALL GALLERY
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Reception: \nSaturday\, January 25\, 20109 \nfrom 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.\nAbout the artist:\n“Magnus Johnstone was born on July 14\, 1952 in Chicago and spent his early years in Dearborn\, Michigan. In 1961\, his family relocated to the East Coast\, settling in Duxbury\, MA. \n  \nAfter graduating high school in 1970\, he attended Wayne State University for a year and then moved to Boston\, to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He left school after a year and spent the bulk of his time in the early to mid-1970s copying works of the old masters and drawing for hours every day\, a habit which he kept until the end of his life. \n  \nOne day in the early ‘70s\, the young artist looked out his apartment window and saw into the apartment of a fellow art student named James Stuart. He was inspired by James’ work and impressed with the large canvases he saw. In response\, in 1974 Johnstone began creating his own 6 foot tall by 4.5 foot wide oil paintings. Magnus continued to create these large oil paintings until September 1994\, after which he gave up painting with oils\, for health reasons. \n  \nDuring the late 1970s and early ‘80s\, Magnus was involved and associated with the Punkt/Data Gallery and Gallery East\, among others. In the early 1990s\, he founded and co-ran The Speedway Gallery in Boston’s North End. \n  \nOnce described as an “Atlantian\,” Johnstone’s fantastical and psychedelic artwork was influenced by sources as diverse as Renaissance art; German expressionism; surrealist painting; naive painting; writers like H. P. Lovecraft\, Philip K. Dick and Harlan Ellison; graphic and comic art of the 1960s; Mayan art\, Japanese anime\, and music. Always music. \n  \nThe paintings he created from 1995 until his death were made using acrylic paints and cans of leftover latex house paint. These developed into what he called his “Junglist” style. Over the years\, he gradually gave up paintbrushes altogether\, instead using strips of cardboard dotted with multiple pigments which he would then swipe across the canvas\, while other areas of the work in progress were blocked off with newspapers and masking tape. He went through 20-30 rolls of masking tape per year. Most of his paintings were initiated by the hundreds of fine pen and ink drawings he created throughout his career. He completed 21 books of finished drawings\, which he shrunk down and reprinted as mangas. \n  \nIn addition to his range of activities in Boston art scene\, in the very early 1980s Magnus became a college radio host\, producing forward-thinking African and Reggae shows on MIT’s WMBR 88.1 FM in Cambridge\, “Aliens’ Corner” and “Reggae Mukasa” – years before “world music” became a popular term and genre. \n  \nAn immediate acolyte of hip-hop music and culture\, in 1985 Magnus started the now-legendary “rap and electro” radio program called “Lecco’s Lemma\,” on WMBR. A year later he moved the show to Boston College’s WZBC 90.3 FM\, where it ran until 1988. As The Noise magazine said in 1987: “Magnus Johnstone is a DJ at the front of a movement\, in it for sheer love of its excitement and possibilities.” \n  \nMagnus’s musical tastes were as diverse as his interests in art and literature. Beyond the African continental and diasporic music to which he was drawn for most of his life\, he was also a dedicated lover of classical music; the romantic period\, early music and especially opera. \n  \nIn 1987\, while working in the basement of a Brookline antique shop Magnus met (and also named) Mango\, who would later become his wife. They began living together in 1991\, and were married in 1994. \n  \nIn a curveball that would have sidelined and beaten a lesser human being\, Johnstone was diagnosed with leukemia in 1990\, and underwent extensive chemotherapy in order to prepare for what he hoped would be a cure. Given only a 40% chance of surviving a year after his bone marrow transplant in 1994\, he lived another 19 years\, and his dedication to his work only deepened and intensified after what he termed his “rebirth.” \n  \nAfter many years in Boston\, in July of 2001 Magnus and Mango relocated to Bucksport\, Maine. One of the primary reasons for choosing Bucksport was its proximity to WERU\, a local community radio station in an adjacent town. In Maine\, they both continued to paint\, and Magnus continued his work in radio. He created his most complex and creative radio program during this era\, called “The Matrix”\, mixing spoken word pieces in with electronica and other sounds from his vast collection. He also initiated and co-hosted a Friday night show called “Da Vibez\,” featuring hip-hop and other electronic-based music. \n  \nDuring his years in Maine he worked at the Liros Gallery in Blue Hill\, restoring paintings and Russian icons\, making frames\, hanging shows and selling art. He curated several film festivals at the Blue Hill Library\, including one featuring Blaxploitation films and another focused on Japanese anime. He also taught a manga-making workshop for children there. \n  \nMagnus Johnstone passed away after a secondary cancer on February 22\, 2013\, after a vibrant life filled with art\, music\, love and community. His friends and family will always remember him as a passionate\, compassionate\, creative soul and a visionary artist and music fan who was constantly in search of his next muse. \n  \nWhen he passed\, he left behind over 80 large canvases\, as well as dozens of medium and smaller sized works. All proceeds from the sales of these works will go to the Johnstone family to help safely store\, maintain\, and market his work.” \nText courtesy of https://www.good-road.net/magnus-johnstone-art

SUMMARY:Jesus Vio\, Hands and Knees\, Wes Buckley\, Old Wave w/ Lindsay Donovan and Lauren Klotzman
DESCRIPTION:Former Bostonian Jesus Vio returns with his bag of splendid\, quixotic pop and a band to beat back the neg vibes one song @ a time. They travel by skateboard from Western Mass and they come to save your soul. You don’t have a soul? Well\, Jesus will have some for sale @ the show my friends. Listen to his latest record \nHands and Knees\, pan-Mass indie pop pillars extraordinaire\, pair well with what Jesus has cooking\, Their soul infused underground pop will bring the bop to Trendy Shit Town ultimately and this is good. Berkshire troubadour Wes Buckley is also coming on back through laying waste to perceptions around folk music (both song based and instrumental rippers) and its ability to stun in 2020. And jesus Old Wave you know them yet? Cosmic americana or something? Boston’s answer to the Dead’s best records\, and if you don’t like that then you should do more listening!! \nLast but not least we have two of Boston’s finer poets\, Lauren Klotzman\, and Lindsay Donovan\, she of Countertop Chants\, bringing us into the poetry vortex at different points in the evening. Breathe it all in my friends!!!!!! – Dan Shea \n///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// \nJesus Vio is coming to town w/ his band.\nCome on now.\nShow is in Roxbury. Message for the info. \nHe just released this record. We like it so much that we’re bringing him back to town.\nhttps://jesusvio.bandcamp.com/album/dutch-science \nHere’s some recent things we’ve written about Jesus @ the Hassle:\nhttps://bostonhassle.com/jesus-vio-dutch-science/\nhttps://bostonhassle.com/jesus-vio/ \nHand and Knees\nhttps://handsandknees.bandcamp.com/ \nWes Buckley\nhttps://wesbuckley.bandcamp.com/ \nOld Wave\nhttps://oldwave.bandcamp.com/releases \nPLUS:\nLindsay Donovan (from Countertop Chants)\nand Lauren Klotzman will both be reading poetry to open the show.
