SUMMARY:Lani Asuncion and Narrae Kang Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Brookline Arts Center is pleased to present “HUMAN GARDEN | Biosounds” by Lani Asuncion and “Here” by Narrae Kang\, on view February 7-March 6\, 2020. Join us for a reception Friday\, February 7 from 6:00-8:00pm! \nThe “HUMAN GARDEN” series is a body of work that aims to bring a focus on how people in urban environments interact with their surrounding green spaces. Biosounds will enable visitors to listen to the sounds made from the plants in the gallery and create a collaborative rhythm by touching and interacting with them. \n“Here” is a series of archival drawing projects of the Brookline Arts Center by artist Narrae Kang. By transcribing on the surface of glass with a mark-making method\, she tries to reinvent how we feel the beauty in our daily lives and raises questions about the life of an immigrant woman artist. \nLearn more: bit.ly/2NMQiB0

SUMMARY:CHRISTINE PALAMIDESSI: ICONS & TALISMANS @ GALATEA FINE ARTS
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: \nIcons & Talismans is a story about eyes that follow us; soft hands that have loved us; about allowing our vulnerability to pass through an image to invite the connection point between human and divine. To realize the images\, I spent time in Salento (southernmost region on the heel that is Italy)\, following the footsteps of Byzantine artists who painted in the 10th and 11th centuries. I found small chapels\, Crusader hideaways\, and even an unearthed\, underground sanctuary discovered when the property owner remodeled his garage. Each location featured frescos. Many of the frescos echoed each other in size\, expression\, color\, hand gestures. That’s because Byzantine painters were artists who walked from Croatia to Tuscany and beyond carrying the same catalog of images. Working from their templates\, I made monotypes. Monotypes are reverse paintings on glass. Paper is pressed on the glass and then peeled off to reveal a right-side-forward image. My intent was not only to tell a story about the human spirit and to duplicate the Byzantine practice\, but to also transport sensations\, time and place to Boston. (The large monotypes chosen for the exhibition are modeled on frescos in Casaranello\, a small paleochristian church; the oldest and most important monument in the primitive Christian age of southeastern Italy.) \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nChristine Palamidessi is an artist\, sculptor and published novelist. She works in her Somerville studio and in Salento\, Italy. Her art explores the imprint of time\, story\, and spirit on the interplay of material and subject. In 2017 she was Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome and at Mass MoCA. Her work is held in collections in the Dominican Republic\, Italy and the United States. She is recipient of a Barbara Demming Award for Women Writers and an Urban Arts Award. Her public art memoir “Grandmothers” is engraved on a granite monolith at Boston’s Orange Line Jackson Square station. Her installations and sculptures have been seen in galleries in Boston–particularly Atlantic Works Gallery\, Galatea Fine Arts\, and the State House–as well as in Chicago’s Woman Made Gallery\, the Palazzo Bacile di Castiglione\, in Spongano\, Italy\, and the Alfred Gallery in Tel Aviv. \n  \nPublic is invited to Open Artist Talk and Visit with Christine Palamidessi in our Gallery on: \nSunday February 9 \nThursday February 13 \nSaturday February 15 \nWednesday February 19 \nSaturday February 22 \nFriday February 28 \nThere will be an opening reception on 2/7 from 6-9pm \nImages and text from www.palamidessi.com

SUMMARY:PUNISHABLE BY LAW @ GODINE FAMILY GALLERY
DESCRIPTION:“Punishable by law. An insidious reminder. A half-empty threat. Insurance. A reason to f*ck with you\, if we feel like it. We is the state. The manufacturer. The dollar. A badge. A machine designed to marginalize you\, then punish you for it. Because to be marginal is to be criminal. And to be criminal is punishable by law. – Shaka Dendy \nWhen people everywhere take utility into their own hands and reject a preconceived corporate purpose; When people everywhere build alternative resources and infrastructure based on need; With manipulations of labor into play and objects into universes\, authority and private property must perpetually legitimize themselves. They respond with violence. How do we respond? – Noriyoshi Needle \nFor February 2020\, Godine Family Gallery is pleased to host a dual exhibition entitled PUNISHABLE BY LAW\, featuring artists Shaka Dendy and Noriyoshi Needle. \nWorking across installation\, sculpture\, video\, digital and printed media\, Dendy and Needle confront the criminalization of marginalized communities and the collective generation of possibility. Probing the historical and contemporary significance of plastic crates\, raw cotton stalks\, police batons\, traffic cones\, and other objects via their recontextualization\, the work addresses the toxic biases towards race\, class\, and age spearheaded by hegemonic powers. Dendy and Needle wield their dual positions as interdisciplinary artists and community organizers to speculate futures through unforgettable art experiences. Additionally\, the exhibition extends into room N181 featuring a series of works by Needle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPUNISHABLE BY LAW is on view from February 3rd through 14th at Godine Family Gallery\, with an opening reception on February 8th at 7 pm.” \nImages and text via godinefamily.gallery

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Hana Yilma Godine of Spaces Within Space at Gallery 263
DESCRIPTION:“Gallery 263 is pleased to announce Spaces Within Space\, a solo exhibition by Hana Yilma Godine. This show is part of Gallery 263’s Exhibition Proposal Series—a program in which shows are selected by a competitive jurying process. In Spaces Within Space\, the artist draws upon time spent living in numerous places—including a childhood in Ethiopia\, an experience studying abroad in Spain\, and\, most recently\, a move to the United States—to layer space and search for commonalities between forms in both her large-scale figure paintings and intimate landscape paintings. \nExploring and discovering visual languages from different materials—including oil and acrylic paint\, charcoal\, gesso\, fabric from Ethiopia\, and collaged magazines from Ethiopia—permits Hana to layer transparent surfaces on canvas and fabric. With these mediums\, she draws\, then loses the drawing through coloring; eventually\, she finds the original marks\, which she likens to rediscovering herself. This layering of space mirrors the artists’ views of the realities and transitory nature of a globalized world and the experiences of different places and time that is central to it. By working in this manner\, Hana unfolds an accumulation of history\, creating a composite of women from different places and different times to create unique spaces. \nAbout the Artist \nHana Yilma Godine was born in the southern Ethiopian village of Arssi Negele and grew up in Addis Ababa. After graduating from high school\, she attended the Abyssinia School of Fine Art and Design\, where she studied drawing\, sculpture\, and painting\, which prepared her to enter Addis Ababa University Ale School of Fine Arts and Design. There she studied painting and drawing. Hana studied painting and serigraphy in Spain as an exchange student. She also taught drawing at the Lideta Architecture College in Addis Ababa. \nShe moved to the United States to continue her education\, studying theory and literature\, which has helped her learn about American life and culture. Her work has been exhibited at the Alliance Ethio-Francise Art Gallery\, Muse Gallery\, the Columbus Convention Center Project\, and Clark Gallery. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at the Boston University College of Fine Arts.” \n  \nImages and text from http://www.gallery263.com/exhibitions/spaceswithinspace/

SUMMARY:Policarpa: A Staged Reading
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host a staged reading of a new play by Diana Burbano: Policarpa. \nFriday\, January 31st at 7:30pm\, Dorchester Art Project.\n$5 entry\, $10 entry w/ snacks\nNo one is turned away. \nPost-show conversation with playwright to follow reading. \nDirected by Tatiana Isabel Gil. \nCast:\nTanya Avendano Stockler -Ingrid\nLuz Lopez- Policarpa\nEvelyn Martinez- Valentia\nAngelika Menendez- Paciencia\nWren Romero- Realidad\nMikhail Yarovoy- Bibiano/Solado/Viejo \nAbout the piece:\nIn the near future\, an inexplicable plague infests La Gran Colombia. Ingrid Bolivar–the brilliant\, mad ex-wife of Colombia’s leader–is the only one who knows that the plague is carried by young women of the streets\, whom she adopts and uses as weapons against the government. Policarpa\, a girl with magical gifts\, is supposed to be Ingrid’s secret apocalyptic weapon. But when Policarpa falls in love with a top government official\, she resists becoming an instrument of destruction and instead seeks to become a savior through sacrifice. \nRooted in traditional Latin American magical realism\, the nightmare magic science fiction world of Policarpa exists in a neither here-or-there. \nPolicarpa has been developed by The Drama League’s Rough Draft series\, Theatricum Botanicum Seedlings\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival Black Swan Lab Latinx Play Project\, and Milagro Theatre’s Ingenio play reading series. It received an Honorable Mention for the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award and was a finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for DOT NOW
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition:\n    Inspired by requests from our visitors to highlight more local artists\, Dot Now presents artworks made by artists living and/or working in our neighborhood of Dorchester. The exhibition seeks to foster a stronger sense of community between artists in the area and UMass Boston while celebrating their work within the Greater Boston Area. Dot Now gathers a set of intergenerational artists who are working in a variety of media\, connected through their locale and shared social concerns\, but distinctive in their artistic practices and personal narratives. Supporting programming to be announced in the coming weeks will look at the ways in which artists in Dorchester are self-organizing to support and sustain the arts in their community by creating spaces\, discourses\, and contexts for their work and that of their peers. The artists that we have worked with during the development of this exhibition have proven to be closely interconnected\, with many artists supporting one another’s work through events\, studio programs\, and exhibitions. \nKnown somewhat ironically as “The Dot\,” Dorchester is Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood. The borough’s complex demographics\, with a mixture of identities and international backgrounds intrinsically influenced our selection of artworks for Dot Now. African Americans make up the largest segment of the population of Dorchester by race (43% as of 2010)\, alongside prominent Vietnamese\, Caribbean\, and Latinx communities. The complexity of the neighborhood has led to an intersectional group of artists. For this reasons\, the exhibition does not attempt to locate a single take on what it means to be an artist based in Dorchester\, nor is it meant to act as a definitive gathering of different practices or trends taking place in the area. Instead\, we have chosen to present a broad variety of artworks and artists with similarly diverse perspectives and techniques. Through their practices\, these artists confront issues such as identity politics\, globalism\, and social practice\, among others. \nIn an homage to her grandmother\, Suzie “Cookie” Smith’s sculpture Cara’s House renders a model of a proposed cultural center that Smith envisions founding in the home of her grandmother that Smith’s mother now owns. Located in Hayneville\, Alabama\, her home sits on a parcel of cleared land that is located adjacent to her sister\, Rosie Steele’s farm. This is of historical significance because this land is located on the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. On March 22\, 1965 this land served as Campsite #2 for marchers walking 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery Alabama\, a protest that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year\, upholding racial minorities’ constitutional right to vote under the 14th Amendment. Local artist and designer\, Aiden Nguyen\, will present the full volume of the series of zines entitled Vănguard\, a project he co-founded with Thanh Mai. The collaborators developed the zine to create a safe platform for the visibility and individuality of self-identified lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender/trans*\, and queer (LGBTQ) artists and writers in Vietnam and across the Vietnamese diaspora. In two new projects by Andrew Mowbray\, the artist sources materials from Dorchester Bay and his expansive collection of milk-crates to discuss issues of locality\, utility\, and design. This includes an architectural intervention stretching from floor to ceiling in the gallery that will tell a partial history of sixty years of milk-crate design. In another new installation entitled Make a Wish for Dorchester\, Joanna Tam will share wishes from Dorchester residents\, allowing visitors to share their thoughts on how to create a better neighborhood for themselves and others. We will also be including a portrait by the youngest artist to ever show at University Hall Gallery\, Deandra Shannon Spence\, who is a current student at the Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy\, a tuition free charter public school located in Fields Corner. These projects and others will be complimented by programs that will activate the space\, allow for performance based works\, and help contextualize the exhibition within the art scene of Dorchester. \nThere are several arts organizations\, institutions\, and studios that have both public and private facing programs in Dorchester whom we interfaced with during the development of this exhibition\, including the Dorchester Arts Projects\, Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4SI)\, the African Winter Studio\, Humphrey Street Studios\, Pearl Street Studios\, and the Strand Theater. We would like to thank them as well as the many artists\, curators\, and residents that we met with during the development of this exhibition who continue to champion and sustain the arts in Dorchester. \nDot Now is made possible with generous support from the Paul Hayes Tucker Fund\, a gift from The Paul and Edith Babson Foundation\, and in kind support from the College of Liberal Arts at UMass Boston. \n\nArtists include:\nMarlon Forrester\, Rixy Fz\, Zach Horn\, Andrew Mowbray\, Ngoc-Tran Vu\, Aiden Nguyen of Vănguard\, Cristi Rinklin\, Suzie “Cookie” Smith\, Deandra Shannon Spence\, Joanna Tam\, Jamal Thorne\, and Joe Wardwell\n\nText and image from https://mailchi.mp/0795988e9126/dot-now-111819031319 \nFeature image: Jamal Thorne\, Untitled #22\, mixed media on paper

SUMMARY:Class Warfare: The Future of Left Politics
DESCRIPTION:RSVP>> http://bit.ly/rsvpharvardleft\nDonate>> http://bit.ly/donateharvardleft \nIn 1912\, Harvard armed its students to break a strike\, using the motto “Defend Your Class.” On January 28\, 2020\, prominent progressives will gather at Harvard to discuss the past\, present\, and future of class struggle\, and to envision the leftist movement that will arise from it. The 2020 primary is shaping up to be a referendum on the Democratic party\, an ideological battle between the traditional\, Biden-led wing of status quo politics and an emerging faction led by calls for the political revolution of Bernie Sanders. But the primary\, like the 2020 election at large\, is only the beginning. \nJoin us from 6-8pm to hear from two high-profile panels. The first\, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised\,” features Krystal Ball (The Hill\, Rising)\, Meagan Day (Jacobin)\, Katie Halper (Rolling Stone\, Useful Idiots)\, and Nomiki Konst (The Young Turks). The second\, “Battle for the Soul of the Democratic Party\,” includes Dr. Cornel West (philosopher\, author\, Harvard professor)\, Michael Brooks (The Michael Brooks Show)\, Phillip Agnew (Bernie 2020 national surrogate)\, and Esha Krishnaswamy (activist and host of historic.ly). \nThis conference is free and open to the public. Seats are first come first served. Children under the age of 18 are allowed but MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
