SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Hagiography or New Saints @ Distillery Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Interested in the faith systems and hagiographies of secular communities\, Hagiography or New Saints examines sacred practices and symbols of fringe and marginalized communities. Seeking to better represent the essence of mystical phenomena\, the sacred\, veneration\, and ritualization outside conventional religious spaces\, this show is an ethnographically engaged experience in dialogue with the artists’ own lives and the manifestation of communal mythos. SUMMARY:MOTION STATE DANCE FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:MOTION STATE DANCE FESTIVAL\nThursday–Saturday\, March 5–7\, 2020\, 7:30pm\nWaterFire Arts Center’s Main Hall\, 475 Valley St\, Providence\n$30/night; students $20/night; festival pass $70/3 nights \nThe Motion State Dance Festival is a new performance festival designed to introduce Rhode Island audiences to the latest in contemporary dance. This celebration of contemporary performance brings local and national artists together to share their boundary-pushing creative explorations with a growing Rhode Island dance audience. \nThe inaugural festival will focus on solo performances that showcase the diversity of who makes dance and the types of dance being made today. Each night will include work by artists from Rhode Island\, New York City\, New England and beyond\, including solos choreographed by the late Merce Cunningham\, recently performed as part of “Night of 100 Solos” in celebration of the choreographer’s 100th birthday. Interspersed between the performances will be short films of dances made specifically for film. Each evening features a unique program of four different choreographers and two films\, for a total of 18 singular pieces. \nIn addition to the performances and films\, master classes at local colleges and community talks with the artists will expand audiences’ understanding of contemporary movement-based performance. \nMotion State Arts is thrilled to be partnering with WaterFire Arts Center on this new venture. WaterFire’s cathedral-like 37\,000-square-foot Main Hall\, built in 1929 for the US Rubber Company as a manufacturing facility\, is spectacularly inspiring—a truly unique space for these unique artists

SUMMARY:The Perceptionists (Mr Lif \, Akrobatik) with Dub Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:All Ages! \nLocal legend DJ MF Shalem opening for the: \nLegends of hip hop!\nComprised of rappers Akrobatik and Mr. Lif\, The Perceptionists are to the Boston\, Massachusetts hip-hop scene as the Justice League of America are to superheroes: the best of the best marshaling their powers for the collective good. \nThe fiercely political Mr. Lif\, whose 2002 album\, Emergency Rations\, was one of the first hip-hop records to overtly question the abuse of civil liberties in post-9/11 America\, meshes well with Akrobatik’s equally intelligent\, socially conscious vibe first displayed on his 2003 solo debut\, Balance. Friends since their early days on the local scene\, Lif and Akrobatik first started linking at (now Brick Records Owner) Papa D!’s recording studio. They soon joined forces with turntables and local college radio DJ Fakts One\, formally adopting the name the Perceptionists in 2000. A 2004 mixtape called The Razor was the trio’s underground bow\, before their official debut\, Black Dialogue\, was released by Definitive Jux in early 2005. The album went on to make the Top 50 list for Best Hip Hop Album in Rolling Stone Magazine. For the past decade plus\, the two have been releasing solo material and collaborating with a host of artists\, as well as each other on their respective solo projects. Mr Lif has been busy as the frontman for the internationally renown downtempo eletronic music act\, Theivery Corporation. In 2017\, Akrobatik and Mr. Lif decided to revive the Perceptionists\, as Fakts One had essentially retired from the music business. The end result was a critically acclaimed new album\, Resolution. Released on Mello Music Group July 2017\, this is truly a timeless record. The first full-length from The Perceptionists in a dozen years reflects the struggles and near-death sagas that struck Mr. Lif and Akrobatik during that span.\nThe duo are lifelong friends still trading bars with the chemistry of Tip and Phife\, Andre and Big Boi or Erick and Parrish\, all the while offering a conscious perspective not commonly found in the modern mainstream.\nNow\, the Perceptionists are thrilled to be bringing a full live band show to the stage in support of Resolution. Their backing band features members of the award winning Dub Apocalypse (members of John Browns Body\, Skatalites and more). \nFor more info on The Perceptionists and Dub apocalypse please check the links below\, especially their NPR Tiny Desk Concert that helped launch this incomparable live hip-hop experience. \nPerceptionists Tiny Desk Concert (NPR) \nhttps://youtu.be/GkUY-aVuNQo \nhttps://www.facebook.com/ThePerceptionistsHipHop/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/mrlif/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/AkrobatikMC/\nhttps://dubapocalypse.com
