SUMMARY:Noell Dorsey / Andrea Pensado duo
DESCRIPTION:7pm | $5 suggested \nNOELL DORSEY is a singer\, improviser and experimental vocalist based in Somerville MA. She is a member of the venerable ultra-heavy psych-rock outfit Major Stars. She also performs with the improv duos Avoidance and Beautiful Weekend. Coming from a classical singing background\, she incorporates various vocal techniques and extensions to create a textural and uninhibited terrain. \nANDREA PENSADO is an experimental musician\, composer\, and organizer\, based in Salem\, Massachusetts. While she initially composed for acoustic instruments\, she was increasingly attracted to working with electronics to create a far more abrasive sound world. In her current work\, she employs a highly personal sonic language using harsh\, dense layers of sounds\, often interwoven with her voice. Her live\, interactive musical systems and use of invented language combine into inherently unstable performances full of ecstatic energy. In addition to her solo work\, she has longtime collaborations with Chris Strunk & Walter Wright as Los Condenados\, and Jen Gelineau & Stephanie Germaine as Phurnne. She also curates the Sonorium concert series in Salem.

SUMMARY:Leila Bordreuil+Jake Meginsky duo/Vic Rawlings/Matt Krefting
DESCRIPTION:Leila Bordreuil is a Brooklyn-based cellist\, composer and sound-artist from France. She accesses concepts as diverse as Noise\, contemporary classical\, free jazz\, and experimental traditions but adheres to none of them. Her music mixes deep melancholia with harsh noise-walls at ear-bleeding levels\, and was described by the New York Times as “steadily scathing music\, favoring long and corrosive atonalities”. Driven by a fierce interest in pure sound and inherent texture\, Leila challenges conventional cello practice through extreme extended techniques and unorthodox amplification methods\, to the extent she sometimes seems to be playing the P.A system rather than the cello. Her compositions frequently incorporate sound-spatialization by way of site-specific pieces and multichannel installations\, and focus on neurological perception and our physiological relationship to sound and space. She creates psycho-acoustic effects through the manipulation of specific frequencies\, amplitude levels\, and careful speaker placement to provoke altered cognitive states.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUfjQc7uqlo#action=share \nArt In America Magazine says\, “Meginsky’s digital concrète takes percussion to outer extremes.”\n \nMatt Krefting: Holyoke’s most dangerous tape slinger\n \nVic Rawlings (Florence MA- amplifier/ prepared cello\, speaker elements/ exposed circuitry) employs a still and unstable sound language that traverses from the visceral excess of the Laurence Cook Disaster Unit to the extreme austerity of undr quartet. He has designed and built 2 separate instruments to realize this aesthetic\, including extensive and invasive cello preparations- some directly based on obscure baroque instrumentation. The amplified cello is used as a resonant wooden microphone. He also continually develops an electronic instrument from the exposed circuit boards of sound processors\, effectively producing an analog synthesizer with a highly unstable interface. This electronic instrument is realized by a flexible array of exposed speaker elements\, chosen for their often unpredictable and idiosyncratic acoustic qualities. His solo performances deny conventional assumptions about the use of time and refuse alliance with dominant trends in improvised music. \nVic Rawlings

Her music mixes deep melancholia with harsh noise-walls at ear-bleeding levels\, and was described by the New York Times as “steadily scathing music\, favoring long and corrosive atonalities”. \nDriven by a fierce interest in pure sound and inherent texture\, Leila challenges conventional cello practice through extreme extended techniques and unorthodox amplification methods\, to the extent she sometimes seems to be playing the P.A system rather than the cello. Her compositions frequently incorporate sound-spatialization by way of site-specific pieces and multichannel installations\, and focus on neurological perception and our physiological relationship to sound and space. She creates psycho-acoustic effects through the manipulation of specific frequencies\, amplitude levels\, and careful speaker placement to provoke altered cognitive states. \nLeila is also a dedicated improviser and “rising figure in New York’s improvised music scene” (The Chicago Reader).\nAs per the tradition of improvised music\, she has maintained a very active concert schedule sharing the stage with a wide range of artists including Marina Rosenfeld\, Eli Keszler\, Anthony Coleman\, Peter Evans\, Thurston Moore\, Nate Wooley\, SENYAWA\, C. Spencer Yeh\, Toshimaru Nakamura\, Tetuzi Akiyama\, Susan Alcorn\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Zeena Parkins\, Lee Ranaldo\, Weasel Walter\, Kim Gordon\, Chris Corsano\, Aki Onda and more.\n\nHer collaborative projects are notoriously numerous and diverse\, and include duos with Bill Nace (Body/Head)\, Japanoise artist Tamio Shiraishi (Fushitutsa)\, techno producer Bookworms\, bassist Zach Rowden\, sound-artist Julia Santoli\, saxophonist Michael Foster\, and a freely improvised trio with Sean Ali and Joanna Mattrey. \nHer work has been showcased at notable venues such as The Whitney Museum\, The Kitchen\, MoMA PS1\, Issue Project Room\, Lincoln Center\, the Stone\, Roulette\, Pioneer Works\, Le Guess Who (Utrecht)\, Cafe Oto (London\, UK)\, All Ears Festival (Oslo\, NO)\, KRAAK Festival (Brussels)\, Sound of Stockholm Festival\, BRDCST Festival (Brussels)\, Control Club (Bucharest)\, Ausland (Berlin\, DE)\, Ftarri (Tokyo\, JP)\, the Heresy Series for Women in Sound (Manila\, PHL)\, and countless basements across the U.S.A. \nLeila is a 2020 Artist in Residence at the GRM\, Paris\, and Exploring the Metropolis (NYC). Past residencies include EMS\, Stockholm (2019)\, Les Brasseries Atlas\, Brussels (2018)\, the MacDowell Colony (2017)\, Issue Project Room (2016) and the Atlantic Center for the Arts (2013). \nMOVEMENT – Alex Springer and Xan Burley\nThe work of dance artists Xan Burley and Alex Springer\, as creative and life partners\, is inherently and essentially collaborative. Since 2008\, their cohesive efforts have taken shape as dance theatre for the stage and camera\, interdisciplinary work\, site-specific performance\, durational exhibition\, and community engagement. They strive to make work that inhabits spaces holistically\, creating physical landscapes that harmonize with each individual project. With multidisciplinary collaborators\, they collectively design comprehensive aural\, visual\, and contextual environments in which performance is experienced intimately. \nWORDS – Jay Pabaroo

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Hagiography or New Saints @ Distillery Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Interested in the faith systems and hagiographies of secular communities\, Hagiography or New Saints examines sacred practices and symbols of fringe and marginalized communities. Seeking to better represent the essence of mystical phenomena\, the sacred\, veneration\, and ritualization outside conventional religious spaces\, this show is an ethnographically engaged experience in dialogue with the artists’ own lives and the manifestation of communal mythos. SUMMARY:MOTION STATE DANCE FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:MOTION STATE DANCE FESTIVAL\nThursday–Saturday\, March 5–7\, 2020\, 7:30pm\nWaterFire Arts Center’s Main Hall\, 475 Valley St\, Providence\n$30/night; students $20/night; festival pass $70/3 nights \nThe Motion State Dance Festival is a new performance festival designed to introduce Rhode Island audiences to the latest in contemporary dance. This celebration of contemporary performance brings local and national artists together to share their boundary-pushing creative explorations with a growing Rhode Island dance audience. \nThe inaugural festival will focus on solo performances that showcase the diversity of who makes dance and the types of dance being made today. Each night will include work by artists from Rhode Island\, New York City\, New England and beyond\, including solos choreographed by the late Merce Cunningham\, recently performed as part of “Night of 100 Solos” in celebration of the choreographer’s 100th birthday. Interspersed between the performances will be short films of dances made specifically for film. Each evening features a unique program of four different choreographers and two films\, for a total of 18 singular pieces. \nIn addition to the performances and films\, master classes at local colleges and community talks with the artists will expand audiences’ understanding of contemporary movement-based performance. \nMotion State Arts is thrilled to be partnering with WaterFire Arts Center on this new venture. WaterFire’s cathedral-like 37\,000-square-foot Main Hall\, built in 1929 for the US Rubber Company as a manufacturing facility\, is spectacularly inspiring—a truly unique space for these unique artists
