SUMMARY:Last Day Of Parks and The City: Conflict and Change
DESCRIPTION:Parks and the City: Conflict and Change\nArtists: David Friedman\, Jacob Geiger\, Jennifer Mawson\, Navidreza Haghighi Mood\nThe Fort Point Arts Community Gallery is pleased to announce “Parks and the City\,” the first show of the 2020 season juried by Jessica Hong\, Associate Curator of Global Contemporary Art at Dartmouth University’s Hood Museum of Art. The four photographers in “Parks and the City”—David Friedman\, Jacob Geiger\, Jennifer Mawson\, and Navidreza Haghighi Mood—examine the internal conflicts within the ideology of urban parks. They look beyond the celebrated landscape design and recreational program of the founders to the physical and experiential edges of the parks. Dark moments and tall weeds make visible the unstable character of nature in this artificial setting. \nThe photographers give their separate interpretations of the urban park as a site of conflict and change. They look afresh at one of the city’s greatest resources\, challenging the idea of natural beauty and the ability of landscape design to establish a permanent meaning for the parks. \n“Focusing on city parks\, this exhibition will examine notions of public and private\, ‘neutral’ and politicized space\, and the complexities of controlling nature\,” says Hong in making her selections for the season. “Though most urban dwellers experience the park in its finished form\, these natural environments are highly planned and mediated spaces. Furthermore\, as the landscape of Boston is developing rapidly\, it is important to think about what this kind of urban design or sanitizing of the landscape is doing to the city\, how it can erase the complicated\, colonial histories of the Boston area\, and\, along with the past\, how it affects the present and future.” \nOn Saturday\, March 28\, at 5:30\, the artists will speak about the general context of their photographic project within the history of urban landscape photography\, followed by presentations of their work by each of the artists. \nEach of the photographers in “Parks and the City” takes a different approach to the general theme of parks; in combination\, the four artists offer a contemporary look at the city’s century-old resource with their interpretations of the urban park as a site of conflict and change. Looking afresh at one of the city’s greatest resources\, they challenge the idea of natural beauty and the ability of landscape design to establish a permanent meaning for parks.

SUMMARY:Last day of WILD @ Gallery 263
DESCRIPTION:“In WILD\, a range of media\, including photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and video\, is on view. Liza Clement\, fascinated by ecological phenomena in the age of the Anthropocene\, imagines a hybrid organism in ectosymbiotic commensalistic behavior (hybrid)\, by using plastic\, light\, and heat to increase or decrease growths of found and collected natural and inorganic elements. In Reduce\, Reuse\, and Recyclone II\, Andrew Wood strives to combat climate chaos by embodying sustainable order through the use of found materials and renewable balsa wood. Gretchen Woodman’s Rhino\, a kinetic wall hanging comprised of multiple layers of painted silk\, mimics inhales and exhales through gentle movements in the fabric and captures the struggles of animals existing alongside humans. Not only does the work on view in this show reference art historical depictions of landscape and nature\, but it also shifts the perspective to highlight the tensions and complications of human interaction.” \nThere will be a reception on Friday\, Feb. 28th from 7-9pm \n  \nText and image (Flock – Leigh Craven) from Gallery 263

SUMMARY:last day of RACHEL ALLEN: AIRPLAY @ THE URBANO PROJECT
DESCRIPTION:Urbano is proud to feature airplay\, a site-specific interactive installation by Rachel Allen (Nez Perce) and the culmination of her Fall 2019 artist residency at Urbano Project. \nBreathing is a voluntary and involuntary function. Sometimes we are conscious of our breaths\, or made aware of our breathing air’s origin. But these moments come infrequently. The same can be said of our ideologies. There are times when we purposefully take in and accept\, or reject. But often belief systems are so pervasive and invisible\, they are obtained without conscious thought. \nI aim to unsettle the air we breathe and otherwise manipulate. If we consider the ubiquitous material we are suspended in\, then we can begin to contemplate what seems invisible\, like beliefs we uncritically accept. We might examine the political\, cultural\, and environmental implications of atmosphere and sky. \nButtons throughout the installation can be pressed to move air around this space. The inflated forms reference stories from my Nez Perce culture. Indigenous cosmologies can teach us how to attend to the air and reaffirm our connections to nonhumans. I invite the audience to intentionally interact with air\, understand its agency\, and recall our interconnectedness. Perhaps then we will start to breathe easier.\n– Rachel Allen (Nez Perce) \n\nAbout the Artist: \nRachel Allen (Nez Perce) is an artist and curator\, exhibiting her artwork and presenting on her scholarship nationally. An Assistant Curator at the Peabody Essex Museum\, she recently exhibited at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University.  She has dual citizenship with the United States and with her Native nations\, the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho. Allen holds an MFA in Printmaking and an MA in Arts & Cultural Management and Museum Studies from Michigan State University. She received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. \nVisit her website & follow her on Instagram @rachel_c_allen \nAs Artist-in-Residence\, Allen provided tools for Urbano’s youth artists to create place-worlds\, or stories upon close examination of the land and their environment.  Students have researched the recent and ancient history of a location of their choice from a variety of facets–municipal\, social\, geological\, current conditions\, personal connections and their stories sharing happened through oral tellings or performances\, and artist books. \n\n29 Germania St.\, Jamaica Plain\, 02130 MA\n1pm – 6pm Tue – Fri \n  \nText and image from http://urbanoproject.org/artist-in-residence

SUMMARY:Noell Dorsey / Andrea Pensado duo
DESCRIPTION:7pm | $5 suggested \nNOELL DORSEY is a singer\, improviser and experimental vocalist based in Somerville MA. She is a member of the venerable ultra-heavy psych-rock outfit Major Stars. She also performs with the improv duos Avoidance and Beautiful Weekend. Coming from a classical singing background\, she incorporates various vocal techniques and extensions to create a textural and uninhibited terrain. \nANDREA PENSADO is an experimental musician\, composer\, and organizer\, based in Salem\, Massachusetts. While she initially composed for acoustic instruments\, she was increasingly attracted to working with electronics to create a far more abrasive sound world. In her current work\, she employs a highly personal sonic language using harsh\, dense layers of sounds\, often interwoven with her voice. Her live\, interactive musical systems and use of invented language combine into inherently unstable performances full of ecstatic energy. In addition to her solo work\, she has longtime collaborations with Chris Strunk & Walter Wright as Los Condenados\, and Jen Gelineau & Stephanie Germaine as Phurnne. She also curates the Sonorium concert series in Salem.
