No need to read the text in advance! \n(Image and event info from SSD’s website) \nAbout the text:\nA New Outlook on Health – Introduction \n“When this pamphlet was originally published in 1975\, its authors wrote: \nWe have the most advanced material base of any society in history and the highest standard of living in the world. Our technology enablesus  to produce goods to satisfy any conceivable material wants. Yet seven other societies have more doctors per capita than we do. In thirteen other countries pregnant women receive better care. Life expectancy for males in this country is shorter than in twenty-one other countries. \nThis quote about the contrast between the US’ advanced capitalist economy and wealth and the state of the health of its population is especially stark at the time of the writing of this introduction. The COVID-19 global pandemic\, which started at the end of 2019 and began peaking in the US at the end of April 2020\, has stripped the world of any illusions that the US could handle the outbreak better than any other country—as it was projected and as the Trump administration boasted. As we send this book to press\, the current number of confirmed cases in the world is more than 4.7 million and confirmed deaths is more than 315\,000 (although epidemiologists agree that the real numbers for both statistics are orders of magnitude higher). The US alone accounts for almost a third of all of the cases and over a quarter of the fatalities in the world\, even though its population is only 4.25% of the global population. Reports of chaos in the medical system include: \n\nThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention refuse WHO test supplies and then send out faulty tests across the country;\nStates fight to outbid each other and the federal government for scarce medical supplies;\nCOVID-19 hospitals allot nurses one surgical mask per week;\nHospital workers wear rain ponchos and trash bags as surgical gowns and bandanas as masks;\nThe federal government gives Carte Blanche to private corporations to develop their own tests that are rushed to market without regulation or regulatory agency approval leading to wildly inaccurate results;\nContradictory information about which health insurance companies would cover the cost of tests and treatment and how much individual patients would be responsible for;\nElected officials call on the elderly to sacrifice their lives to save the economy;\nFederal health agencies actively advise the population that wearing masks is useless\, then reverses course several weeks later to advise everyone to wear face coverings in public;\nSick but uninsured people are turned away at health clinics and hospitals only to succumb to the illness at home;\nBodies buried in mass graves because hospital morgues can’t keep up with the dead;\nThe US president suggests that COVID-19 could be eliminated by beaming sunshine directly inside the patient or injecting disinfectant into the lungs.\n\nThese reports\, and many more\, are true. \nWhen A New Outlook on Health was published\, hospitals were flush with money from federal grants for expansion and modernization. Most Americans were covered by the then-nonprofit Blue Cross health insurance\, and the method for hospitals to maximize profits was extended inpatient care with excessive testing. Today\, on the other hand\, the US is facing a deadly pandemic with hospitals lacking the most basic supplies like gloves\, masks and disinfectant. DESCRIPTION:Create public art projects from home with local\, socially engaged artist Elisa H. Hamilton! \nElisa H. Hamilton is a socially engaged multimedia artist who creates inclusive artworks that emphasize shared spaces and the hopeful examination of our everyday places\, objects\, and experiences.  She holds a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, and an MA in Civic Media from Emerson College. Her work has been shown locally and nationally in solo and group exhibitions. She has been the recipient of four public art grants to create temporary public works in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood\, and two grants from New England Foundation for the Arts.  She has held artist residencies with Vermont Studio Center\, Boston Center for the Arts\, the Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts\, and the Fenway Alliance. DESCRIPTION:Right now\, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University is hosting An Introduction to Nameless Love\, a sculpture exhibition featuring the work of Jonathan Berger.  Berger was inspired by the phenomenon of relationships that defy typical roles and nomenclature.  For this undertaking\, the artist interviewed multiple subjects on their experiences with nameless love\, and then\, through practices “borrowed from antiquated forms of metalsmithing\, interior architecture\, and vernacular typography\,” turned his subjects’ words into large-scale metal sculptures.  Berger’s work can be found on floors 1 and 3 of the Carpenter Center until 12/29.

DESCRIPTION:What does hope look like? Tap into your sources of light with local artist and educator Chanel Thervil. In 2016\, Thervil created the community-inspired sculpture\, EMERGENCE: What does hope look like?\, while an Artist Resident at the Boston Center for The Arts. Thervil invited passersby “to contemplate ideas of aspiration and optimism” and her sculpture continued to evolve out of conversations with neighbors and friends. Thervil will speak about this work and lead us through a sculpture workshop where we create a “Hope Chest” based on our own ideas of hope and those we glean from our community\, family and friends. \nChanel Thervil is a Haitian American artist and educator obsessed with all things art\, community\, and history. While Miami born and Brooklyn raised\, she’s currently Boston based. She believes that all of the sights and sounds from places she’s been can be found in the juxtaposition of colors\, shapes\, and materials she uses to create her art. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Pace University and a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She’s been making a splash in the city via her educational collaborations\, public art\, and residencies with institutions like The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, The DeCordova Museum\, The Urbano Project\, and The Harvard Ed Portal. Her work has been featured by PBS Kids\, The Boston Globe\, The Boston Herald\, The Bay State Banner\, WBUR’s ARTery\, and Hyperallergic.
