DESCRIPTION:Divergences: New Works by Will Whelan\nat Dorchester Art Project November 17th – December 22nd\, 2018 \nOpening Reception November 17th 5-8pm \nGallery hours Saturdays and Sundays 12-6pm \nSince the late 1990s\, the term neurodiversity has emerged to express the phenomenon of great variation in neurocognitive functioning across human brains and minds. Some individuals who feel their neurocognitive functioning substantially diverges from dominant societal standards have self-identified as neurodivergent. Neurodivergence can result from an innate or genetic condition\, such as autism or various forms of mental illness\, or from a brain-altering experience\, such as trauma or usage of psychedelic drugs. Those in the neurodiversity social justice movement support the rights and recognition of neurodivergent individuals and affirm neurodivergent identities\, while resisting attempts to merely pathologize them. At the same time\, the movement acknowledges the grave reality of conditions which have a pathological component. This perspective supports both the wish to be “cured” of the condition\, and the desire to “own it” as part of one’s identity.\n“Divergences” explores the experience of neurodivergence through the artist’s own perspective informed by mental health issues. Through print\, collage\, drawing and mixed media\, the work deals with the mediation between rational and delusional perception\, the breakdown of language\, as well as the historical relationship between scientific “rationality” and perceived pathology. By questioning how we construct “normal” or divergent experience\, the artist hopes to transform the lack of discourse around a taboo subject into an exploration of the possibilities of the human mind.

Then let’s blast. \nDon’t think of The Argo Arkestra\, a superconglomerate of local heroes such as Chris Braiotta (Storytime at the Ape’s Nest\, Planet of Adventure)\, Adam Brilla (Broken River Prophet)\, Bear Brown (Gun Mother\, HO-AG)\, Brian Church (Tristan Da Cunha)\, Tyler Derryberry (Planet of Adventure\, HO-AG)\, Noell Dorsey (Major Stars\, Guillermo Sexo)\, and Ernie Kim (Tristan Da Cunha\, Jernie\, Malibu Gaze)\, as a band.  Think of them as psychonautic pioneers on a mission\, devoted to a singular cause: To recreate the sounds\, senses\, and subtleties that scored 1979’s cult cartoon\, Star Blazers.   \nThe brainchild of Hiroshi Miyagawa’s 1974 series Space Battleship Yamamoto\, Star Blazers’ soundtrack has been lovingly and painstakingly recreated by The Argo Arkestra to a flurry of synth and guitar activity.  It’s an intense dance party of battling synth and guitar\, dipping in and out of different stratospheres\, combining military march rhythms with fierce 8-bit fury that crescendos into atonal ecstasy.  Basically\, it’s fun\, it’s got rhythm\, and you can bop to it. \nYou can catch the intrepid explorers on Friday\, Nov. 16th at the Lilypad in Inman Sq\, joined by Eric Krauter\, who’ll be putting together a live remix of the show Star Blazers for all you immersive\, multimedia space freaks.  The interplanetary experience begins at 10pm human earth time. \nBefore long\, The Argo Arkestra will be back in the cosmos\, so catch ‘em during their short stay on the ol’ blue marble.  Transmission over.

Early in his career\, he was closely associated with John Cage and the “New York School.” At that time\, Wolff was pioneering the use of indeterminacy in composition\, using open scores that require the performer to interpret them. In the late 1960s\, Wolff responded to the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War by incorporating protest music into his work\, although it is frequently unidentifiable as such. He often composes for prepared piano and his work demonstrates an interest in the space between sounds. \nThough mostly self-taught as a composer\, associations with John Cage\, Morton Feldman\, David Tudor\, Earle Brown\, Frederic Rzewski\, and Cornelius Cardew were important to his work. Beginning in 1953\, Wolff created numerous pieces for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company\,and he and Merce Cunningham worked in a uniquely collaborative manner. Wolff performed in the live musical ensemble accompanying the Company’s farewell “Legacy” tour. More recently\, he has collaborated with the composers Antoine Beuger and Michael Pisaro\, as well as the improvisor Keith Rowe.. \nORDINARY AFFECTS is a group of musicians gathered to workshop\, explore\, commission and perform contemporary experimental music. While the group often focuses on the performance of written compositions\, it also serves as a laboratory for improvisation and the compositions of its members. The collaborative nature of the mission ensures a group that is always in flux; instrumentation is open\, always changing and dependent on the project\, concert and current membership. Current members are: Luke Martin (guitar\, electronics)\, Laura Cetilia (cello)\, J.P.A. Falzone (vibraphone\, keyboards)\, and Morgan Evans Weiler (violin). \nNon-Event’s programming is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council\, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and administered by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

DESCRIPTION:This week\, local artist Kit Collins will be live painting a Where’s Waldo-style mural at Spaceus Brattle\, an artists’ workspace/gallery in Harvard Square where Collins is a member. From the 14th until the 16th\, Kit will be painting members of the public into her growing mural. Each figure is executed in Collins’s quirky style that captures characters’ unique personalities as figures intermingle and interact with one another. DESCRIPTION:HOLLOW DECK is the musical collaboration of MIA FRIEDMAN and ANDY ALLEN. The two reconnoiter dulcet songs and clattering improvisations\, making use of banjo\, gourd banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, tenor sax\, clarinet\, flute\, drum machine\, and tape manipulations. The duo presents music that fluctuates seamlessly between tight dissonance and open harmony. Straddling the worlds of beautiful folk songs and experimental sound collage. She is largely influenced by American roots music and old-time Appalachian traditions\, and blends this with contemporary music in her compositions.
