SUMMARY:Ray McNamara\, Warped Forest\, Solei\, Grace Givertz
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Songwriter’s Reunion: Ray McNamara Music\, Warped Forest\, Solei\, Grace Givertz \nBack from exhaustive touring with an Afro-beat inspired band and the serene escape that is Ithaca\, NY\, Boston OG Ray McNamara returns for one night armed with a whole new approach to his meticulously crafted songwriting. Formerly working as Ghost of Electricity\, Ray’s output felt more rock band inspired with a drummer\, bassist and keyboardist bringing his tunes to life. Since then he has branched out deeper into more experimental timbres with synths and drum machines chugging away with beefy bass lines and metallic grooves. Let his guitar playing and vocal chops twist your brain into redefining the “songwriter”. Conveniently enough we have old friends of the former Bostonian\, Warped Forest\, taking up the next spot on the bill. Getting their start in Lowell\, Warped Forest began as a small guitar loop-based band and has since expanded through many generations of musicians and has finally landed on an outfit that pushes the sonic boundaries with a bombardment of timbres coming from their 5 members which includes two drummers. Their now Boston-based electro-acoustic freak folk is sure to send ya spiraling. Another pal Emma Leavitt of Brain Arts Org fame is slipping in on the bill as Solei! You could compare her sound to Ray’s approach\, but she definitely brings her own brand of experimental songwriting with her unconventional use of bass guitar as her lead instrument and resonant but haunting vocal melodies. Here to ground this bill is Grace Givertz. She’ll remind you where all these wild songwriters got their original inspiration….good ol’ acoustic folk to warm the late Autumn soul. Come to Dorchester Art Project and support a new generation of songwriters here to rustle things up a bit. \nAll Ages\n$10 Suggested Donation \nFlyer by Tony Bullets @TonyBullets \nThe Ghost of Electricity\nhttps://sparkandfizz.bandcamp.com/album/bones\nBONES by The Ghost of Electricity \nWarped Forest\nhttps://warpedforest.bandcamp.com/\nBrain Trails EP by Warped Forest \nSolei\nhttps://soleimusic.bandcamp.com/releases\nWater Games EP by Solei \nGrace Givertz\nhttps://gracegivertz.bandcamp.com/\nThe Light by Grace Givertz

SUMMARY:Scott Oglesby / Jack Arbaugh / mrdirky / Cosmic Tribal Tones
DESCRIPTION:mrdirky\n-Dirk Adams makes sound/music under the name mrdirky. Thoughtfully weird and casually deep. His recent electronic explorations are inspired by self-organizing systems and the mechanisms by which they are constrained. \n\nhttps://mrdirky.bandcamp.com/ \nScott Oglesby\n-Computers\, richly layered drones\, ecstatic beats\, plus mountain dew and extreme thoughtfulness. Scott joins us at Washington Street Arts center to present a solo performance of computer generated ambient music. Still working on that Cat6 – Xlr converter and aspiring to hear the web. \n \nJack Arbaugh\n-Debut performance by artist and JP resident Jack Arbaugh\, using tape manipulation along with keyboard and electronics to build glacial movements of layered pitch. \nCOSMIC TRIBAL TONES\n-Cha Feliz on electric guitar and pedals along with Michael Redmond on drums and percussion. SUMMARY:Thalia Zedek Band w/ Damon & Naomi
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 8\, music at 9. All Ages with ID or guardian \nThalia Zedek Band (Cambridge\, MA – Thrill Jockey Records) \nThalia Zedek is an unparalleled voice in rock music. Her music straddles the line between intimate and visceral. Zedek has received wide acclaim for her intense vocal performances and guitar playing in past projects Come\, Uzi\, Live Skull\, and most recently her new trio E with Gavin McCarthy (Karate) and Jason Sidney Sanford (Neptune). Since the dissolution of Come\, Zedek has focused her solo efforts on more vulnerable\, stripped back arrangements. Her new album Fighting Season combines the grit of her past with the fragility of her solo releases\, spinning tales of discord and struggle from the personal to the political and featuring performances by old friends Chris Brokaw (Come) and J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.). Through her exceptional songwriting and performances\, Thalia Zedek’s fervent passion can be felt more than ever on Fighting Season\, from blustering swirls of dissonance to hushed whispers. \n“Fighting Season” was a term originally coined for the period of time in Afghanistan when winter comes to an end and fighting in the region would resume. Zedek’s reinterpretation of the phrase instead turns the focus on resistance\, on a time to fight for oneself or to protest the deteriorating political landscape. The songs across Fighting Season tell heartfelt stories of individuals battling for their own sense of peace. Title track “Fighting Season” exemplifies the album’s rebellious spirit with a steady\, marching call to action against senseless conflict. “Bend Again” and “War Not Won” simultaneously explore battles with personal demons and addiction as well as the throes of political upheaval and failure. Zedek’s lyricism throughout beautifully captures a duality of individual and collective struggles\, drawn from personal experiences\, as well as those widely discussed in the media such as the turmoil in Syria and the plight of refugees. As a longtime advocate for those seen as “outsiders\,” Zedek’s voice on these subjects holds a rare sense of poignance that few possess. \nThalia Zedek’s band on Fighting Season sees all of the players from her 2015 album Eve returning\, including longtime collaborator and violist Dave Curry\, as well as pianist Mel Lederman\, bassist Winston Braman\, and drummer Jonathan Ulman. Masterful arrangements unfold throughout the record which Zedek crafted as reflections of each story. Curry’s searching viola and guest Jonah Sacks’ longing cello lines underpin the melancholy of “We Will Roll.” Two of the album’s standout guest performances heighten the push and pull of album opener “Bend Again\,” with subtle sliding guitar melodies by Zedek’s former Come bandmate Chris Brokaw\, and the songs dramatic final act guitar solo by J. Mascis. The song had been written with Mascis’s solo in mind\, but Brokaw’s contribution was the result of serendipitous circumstance\, he and Zedek booking recording sessions in the same recording studio at the same time\, just after his move back to Boston. \nFighting Season was recorded throughout late 2017 and early 2018 at Kimchee Records Studio by Andy Hong\, another of Zedek’s frequent collaborators. The album was written leading up to and following the 2016 U.S. elections For both the recording and writing\, Zedek took a more isolated approach than past albums\, writing the material on her own and only presenting the songs to the full ensemble shortly before recording. This isolation leant itself towards crafting some of Zedek’s most direct\, and emotive songs to date. Thalia Zedek has been lauded for decades for her ability to create such immediate\, urgent music and Fighting Season finds Zedek at her sharpest\, delivering potent yet raw songs that inspire hope in a time wrought with fear.\nhttp://www.thrilljockey.com/artists/thalia-zedek \nDamon & Naomi (Cambridge\, MA)\nDamon Krukowski and Naomi Yang started playing music together as the rhythm section\, co-songwriters\, and sometime singers in Galaxie 500. When that band ended\, they continued as a duo\, first recording for Shimmy Disc and then on a series of albums for Sub Pop Records. In 2005\, they formed their own label (20/20/20) and have since released four further Damon & Naomi albums – The Earth Is Blue\, Within These Walls\, False Beats and True Hearts\, and Fortune – alongside reissues of their own and the Galaxie 500 back catalogue. \nIn addition to their work as musicians\, Damon & Naomi are the publishers of Exact Change\, a small press dedicated to avant-garde literature and artists’ writings. Individually\, Damon is a writer (books\, blog\, articles for Pitchfork\, Artforum and others)\, and Naomi is a visual artist (photography\, video\, and graphic design).\nhttps://www.damonandnaomi.com/ \nDanny Oxenburg & Bear and Friends\nopening the show.

SUMMARY:Divergences: New Works by Will Whelan Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Divergences: New Works by Will Whelan\nat Dorchester Art Project November 17th – December 22nd\, 2018 \nOpening Reception November 17th 5-8pm \nGallery hours Saturdays and Sundays 12-6pm \nSince the late 1990s\, the term neurodiversity has emerged to express the phenomenon of great variation in neurocognitive functioning across human brains and minds. Some individuals who feel their neurocognitive functioning substantially diverges from dominant societal standards have self-identified as neurodivergent. Neurodivergence can result from an innate or genetic condition\, such as autism or various forms of mental illness\, or from a brain-altering experience\, such as trauma or usage of psychedelic drugs. Those in the neurodiversity social justice movement support the rights and recognition of neurodivergent individuals and affirm neurodivergent identities\, while resisting attempts to merely pathologize them. At the same time\, the movement acknowledges the grave reality of conditions which have a pathological component. This perspective supports both the wish to be “cured” of the condition\, and the desire to “own it” as part of one’s identity.\n“Divergences” explores the experience of neurodivergence through the artist’s own perspective informed by mental health issues. Through print\, collage\, drawing and mixed media\, the work deals with the mediation between rational and delusional perception\, the breakdown of language\, as well as the historical relationship between scientific “rationality” and perceived pathology. By questioning how we construct “normal” or divergent experience\, the artist hopes to transform the lack of discourse around a taboo subject into an exploration of the possibilities of the human mind.
