SUMMARY:Times Two Series: Director's Showcase - Masary Studios x Kadence Ensemble x Tim Hall
DESCRIPTION:TIMES TWO SERIES TEAMS UP WITH MFA’S SOUND BITES TO RELEASE MARIA FINKELMEIER’S NEW ALBUM ON DECEMBER 6\nIronSounds by Maria Finkelmeier \nOn Thursday\, December 6th at 7pm\, Times Two shines the spotlight on co-director\, Maria Finkelmeier\, featuring works from her brand new album A Line that Terminates at the Present. In collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston’s “Sound Bites\,” the evening will feature Finkelmeier’s music performed artist collective MASARY Studios\, percussion quartet Kadence Ensemble\, and saxophonist/poet Timothy Hall. The event will take place in the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art and is free with museum admission. \n A multi-genre representation of Finkelmeier’s interest in current sounds\, A Line that Terminates at the Present was released to the public in November\, and blends a classical background with electronic beats and pop inspired melodies. The concert will feature percussion quartets performed by Kadence Ensemble inspired by her large-scale score from “Know No.” a commission by the Boston Center for the Arts. The works dissect the emotion one feels when hearing or stating “no\,” as an individual\, minority\, or society at large. In addition to the the quartets\, Finkelmeier will share a suite of marimba and electronics pieces called “Insomnia Suite” and a collaboration boasting the album’s title with Tim Hall. The event will conclude with two high-energy pieces performed by MASARY Studios\, featuring animation projection on the walls of the gallery. \nAbout Times Two: a concert series aiming to provide a common space where musicians from different backgrounds come together to share work and ideas. Whether it be from different places\, genres\, or styles\, each times two event pairs musicians with distinct voices in a laid back\, accessible context. Times Two is a program of Kadence Arts.

SUMMARY:Canon-ish: Canonical Images in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Canon-ish is a play on what is classified as canonic art in the digital age. \nCanon-ish was created using search engine results for works accepted to be masterpieces in the canon of art history. Each search turns up hundreds of versions of these paintings\, each varying slightly in color and cropping. \nPrompted by the proliferation of images in the contemporary art world and on the internet\, Canon-ish explores what is considered art versus what is seen as a reproduction\, and who is considered a genius artist versus who is seen as derivative. In effect\, I aim to question why reproduced\, digital images of canonic pieces are often more easily accepted as works of art than conceptual works being made today. \nEmily Bass is a curator\, artist\, and the Arts Editor of the Boston Hassle. She is interested in how our relationships to images and objects change over time\, a topic that she has explored through makeup\, fashion\, and now\, images in the canon of art history. \nCanon-ish will be on view Tuesday December 4th through Friday December 7th in the lower level of Lesley University’s Lunder Arts Center\, open to the public between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. More information can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/events/390132661529607/?active_tab=about \n

(PTP) \n \n \nIn the past few years\, American artist Dis Fig has become one of the key artists to emerge out of the experimental club world. \nA Berlin via New York transplant\, Dis Fig’s music earnestly reflects her past and present. A member of NYC label and collective PTP fka Purple Tape Pedigree\, whose mold-melting output is woven with the same thread as her own\, her sound touches on a shifting landscape of noise and experimental club genres and bottles moody and darkly powerful selections\, juxtaposed with an eerie topping of rap and unexpected acapellas. DESCRIPTION:$15 Cover @ the Door ($10 Students) / Start 8pm / Doors 7:30pm\nA Stellar Jazz and new Music Trio\nThe Creative Music Series is proud to welcome to Boston \nThe Master at the Piano revealing his New Trio:\n…fresh from gigs in Columbia\, S.A.\, New Haven and Brooklyn \n…with a special musician teaching at Berklee\, from NYC\, who was a choice musician of greats \n…plus a young and eager player embroiled in the NY downtown experimental scene \nAnthony Coleman \n“Anthony Coleman: a bold and innovative pianist whose compositions can be as vibrant as Calder mobiles” \n“I remember him as a bold and innovative pianist\, part of a “third wave” of avant-garde musicians active in Boston in the 1970s that included Marty Ehrlich\, Jon Damian\, Jon Voigt\, and Tom Plsek.” — Steve Elman\, Arts Fuse \n“I didn’t think I wanted to stay with old forms of music. I wasn’t a retro kind of person” \n“There is a notable influence of the late Cecil Taylor\, whom Coleman readily acknowledges” \nPianist and composer Anthony Coleman has been one of the key figures of New York music for nearly four decades. His work bridges the gap between Composition and Improvisation\, Uptown and Downtown\, and spans a wide range of genres and practices including Free Improvisation\, Jazz\, Jewish music (of various types)\, and Contemporary Chamber Music. \nBalancing a powerful sense of structural logic and expressionistic color\, Coleman has had a prolific career as a composer\, too. \nHe has been an esteemed member of the faculty of the New England Conservatory since 2006. \nFrancisco Mela \n“To witness the innovative jazz drummer and composer\, Francisco Mela\, live in action is to stand visually and sonically arrested by his out of this world talent and razor sharp skill born out of a relentless pursuit to elevate his craft. Yes. He’s that good.” — Johnathan Eaglin\, irockjazz.com \n“Mela is in the forefront of a progressive post-bop scene that includes collaborators like his sometime boss Joe Lovano\, as well as Mark Turner\, Jason Moran\, et al.” — Boston Phoenix \n“…the thrum of Afro-Cuban folk music and the thrust of contemporary post-bop\, Mr. Mela is a bandleader on the rise…” — Nate Chinen\, The New York Times \nFrancisco Mela is a favorite amongst jazz’s elite instrumentalists\, among them\, Joe Lovano\, John Scofield\, JoAnne Brackeen\, Kenny Barron\, Gary Bartz\, Bobby Watsonand McCoy Tyner\, all of whom cite his charisma\, sophistication\, and life-affirming spirit as an extension of his incredible talents as a composer and drummer. \nFrancisco was born in 1968 in Bayamo\, Cuba. He moved to Boston in 2000 to pursue a degree at the acclaimed Berklee College of Music and\, quickly thereafter\, the faculty recognized that Mela had much to offer students and promptly hired him to teach at the school. Mela rapidly made a name for himself on the Boston scene\, becoming the house drummer at the legendary Wally’s Café Jazz Club. It was at Wally’s that Mela began developing a concept for his own band\, one that would feature the sounds of Fellow Berklee faculty member and world-renown saxophonist\, Joe Lovano\, heard Mela and was immediately impressed\, hiring him shortly after to play in his quartet. \nfranciscomela.com \nHenry Fraser \nHenry Fraser (b. 1991) is a bassist\, composer\, and improviser from Boston\, MA\, now in Brooklyn. He received his BA from New England Conservatory of Music in the spring of 2014\, where he studied with Cecil McBee\, John McNeil\, Dave Holland\, Anthony Coleman\, & Ted Reichman. Henry’s parallel pursuits of technical mastery and novel experimentation have put him at the forefront of the experimental music scene in New York and beyond\, playing at such venues as Moers Festival\, Panama Jazz Festival\, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival\, (Le) Poisson Rouge\, Roulette Intermedium and Joe’s Pub. Henry has worked with Joe Morris\, Tony Malaby\, Mat Maneri\, Weasel Walter\, Axel Dörner\, Judith Berkson\, Ryan Power\, Charmaine Lee\, Chris Pitsiokos\, and many others. Current projects include CP Unit\, Brandon Seabrook Trio\, Anthony Coleman Trio\, The Full Salon\, and solo music for the double bass. \nhenry-fraser.com \n– \nThe Creative Music Series (CMS) was established in January\, 2015\, to showcase the work of adventurous jazz musicians from out-of-state\, presenting them in intimate venues in the Cambridge/Somerville area. My endeavor was a reaction to the apparent lack of invitations being extended to accomplished\, new talent and even unknown musicians to the Boston arcea. CMS has now begun to zero in on Boston based musicians who are creating their own projects with these out-of-town guests\, and taking these musical risks to find an expression and gain a wider appreciation.

SUMMARY:Sonkhonkett Treater! Townie puppet show!
DESCRIPTION:Sonkhonkett is a puppet comedy troupe that details the lives of townies in the Northshore city of Sonkhonkett. We’ll have puppet acts\, stand-up comedy and video shorts.\nThis show will also act as a kick-off for our month long fundraiser. We here at Sonkhonkett are invested in the local New England community and we strive to make sure all artists\, laborers and craftsmen/women are paid fairly. The crowdfunding is partly responsible for fueling the income flow that goes directly to all the Sonkhonkett participants. We hire a lot of people from painters\, sculptors\, animators\, performers\, musicians\, video tech\, promoters and laborers and we’re determined to become a viable entertainment production company that employs people in the region.

SUMMARY:Mask Building Workshop with Grady Roper
DESCRIPTION:Mask Building Workshop:\nGrady Roper is a visual and musical performance artist from Texas\, whose main project is Attic Ted\, a weirdo cabaret post punk gothic carnival music project that features Roper as different characters by using multiple handmade masks. Grady will be hosting a workshop\, inviting the public to construct their own masks. The workshop feature utilizing cardboard box material and hot glue guns and acrylic paint and friendly conversation to explore your alter-ego limits. Attic Ted has been wearing masks and performing music all over the USA and Europe for over 15 years\, and understands how mask wearing creates a freedom of expression\, not only from being onstage\, but also as an audience member. Dancing wild is easier when no one can see you… So\, these workshops have been incorporated into Attic Ted tours. Come build a mask of Wednesday night\, and consider coming to the concert on Thursday\, expanding the idea of what it means to participate in watching music. … Workshop participants are encouraged to bring their own hot glue gun\, scissors/box cutter\, and any random acrylic paint/brushes they are willing to share. Expect a small informal affair\, as in just making art with friends.. Please and Thank You..\nbandcamp page of Attic Ted:\nParade Dust Mischief by Attic Ted
