SUMMARY:GRRL HAUS: BOSTON EDITION\, PART 2
DESCRIPTION:Grrl Haus Cinema is a program that provides a platform for women filmmakers and video artists. They represent a mix of local\, national\, and international women who create in a variety of disciplines and genres\, with the sole medium being video\, cinema. \nAlthough beginning as an annual event at Brattle Theatre\, Grrl Haus Cinema is now an international concern\, showcasing work at theaters and pop-ups across the country and abroad. The Brattle event includes musical performances\, video art installations\, and local Boston vendors. \nWith a focus on DIY\, experimental\, and low-budget works\, there is an atmosphere that is reminiscent of French New Wave or punk rock. Likewise\, Grrl Haus Cinema showcases underrepresented voices in an industry typically dominated by men and marketability. At a Grrl Haus Cinema event\, anything is possible and anything can happen\, as they break down the traditional boundaries of filmmaking. \n–Nicholas Perry

SUMMARY:Curt Newton experimental coffee house
DESCRIPTION:7pm | $5 \nCURT NEWTON coaxes whispers from drumsets and swing from stacks of rattly stuff\, weaving varied musical traditions together in the spirit of serious playfulness. Over the past three decades\, Curt has performed across the U.S.\, Canada and Europe and appears on over 30 CDs with some of contemporary music’s leading figures including Ken Vandermark\, Joe Morris\, Nate McBride\, Pandelis Karayorgis\, Charlie Kohlhase\, Dave Bryant\, and Steve Norton\, and most recently as the drummer in the Eric Hofbauer Quintet. About one live performance\, the Chicago Reader’s Peter Margasak wrote “Newton dazzles…He exhibited breathtaking restraint\, breaking down time with a subtle hand\, tapping out painterly splashes of sound.” Curt studied privately with Bob Gullotti\, has a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory\, and once upon a time created a solo drumset arrangement of Lutoslawski’s String Quartet (available on Bandcamp). \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Brookline Commission for the Arts and the Boston Cultural Council\, both local agencies which are funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The Boston Cultural Council is administrated by the Mayor’s Office of Arts + Culture.

SUMMARY:Activism|Conversations|SAUNA - Sweat It Out
DESCRIPTION:Sweat it Out offers free Wintertime public access to a beautiful\, handmade mobile sauna (courtesy of the DS Institute\,) which also acts as the site for and prelude to frank but friendly\, mediated conversations. We bring the rejuvenating health benefits of sauna out of the spas and back to its community-strengthening origins\, and then apply the well-being and camaraderie it generates towards exploring local tensions and disputes. Sweat it Out will base its initial offerings along Fort Point’s beautiful\, MBTA-accessible waterfront\, where rapid real estate development presents immediate fodder for conversations about Boston’s conflicted desires for growth and authentic local character. \nThis is a public art project by Caitlin Foley\, Heather Kapplow and Misha Rabinovich. \nThe following events will be held in conjunction with this project: \nSunday December 9th from 1-5pm: While the sauna is steaming\, Elizabeth Aliu\, a mediator and conflict specialist\, will facilitate thinking focused on “how a city defines\, creates and maintains its identity” using an approach called “dialogic feedback” to create a safe atmosphere of sharing\, reflecting and learning. Elizabeth says “I’m looking forward to sharing\, learning and relaxing in the mobile sauna with attendees.” And suggests that anyone reading this in preparation for visiting reflect on a place\, thing or a symbol that creates a sense of belonging. \nThis event will also include a special closing tea ceremony led by artist Christen Shea. \nThursday December 13th from 5-9pm:  We’ll be imagining what a future Boston we’d be all happy to live in would feel like\, and seeking new\, creative ways forward after community rifts and trauma with Orion Kriegman. \nOrion is Executive Director of Boston Food Forest Coalition\, and former Co-Director of NET New England\, where he co-founded and led Jamaica Plain New Economy Transition (JP NET)\, a community-driven project in Boston pioneering a “new” economy that is place-based\, sustainable\, and reduces race and class inequity. Orion was also Project Officer for Reflecting on Peace Practice\, a practitioner’s learning about peace-building efforts in internal armed conflicts\, and worked for two years in Guatemala with the Organization of American States to help government and civil society implement the policies outlined in the peace accords. \nWhile the sauna steams\, Orion plans to lead relaxing (but lively) small group visioning exercises “so that we can learn and share with each other about our values and hopes for what is possible for our communities here in Boston.” If you want to prepare in advance\, Orion suggests that you “reflect on what it means to belong to the community that is Boston\, by thinking about all of the communities that you belong to here.” \nThis event will also include a special closing tea ceremony led by artist Christen Shea. \nSunday December 23rd from 1-5pm:  Herbalist Anna Booth Cohenwill be guiding visitors through a series of embodied processes to help facilitate connection to the land in its present\, past\, and future states. Anna works with Western folk herbalism\, plant spirit medicine\, and principles of family constellations to connect people with plant\, ancestral\, and consciousness resources. \nDuring our closest-to-the-solstice sauna session\, Anna will lead “meditations with plant resources” and do guided work in small groups\, “using the heart as an organ of perception to access and work with the consciousness of the land and the factors and archetypes which have influence in its state.” \nAnna  encourages vistors to come with an open mind\, with a willingness to step into the unknown\, and with a readiness to share from a place of authenticity and non-judgment. \nAnna says “I am excited to be able to connect with the community and to bring resources and context to what is active in the field of consciousness that is a part of this place.”\n\n  \nSunday December 30th from 5-9pm:  Ride the post sauna heat elation and sweat out the last of 2018 with a closing dance party with DJ BCKWLD & DJ IBG! \nYou can also visit our project’s immersive art installation during FPAC Space at the Envoy’s normal gallery hours: Wednesday 4-8pm\, Thursday 12-5pm\, Friday 12-5pm\, Saturday 12-5pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Brandie Blaze/ La Neve/ Joe Grizzley/ Zaafir/ See Four
DESCRIPTION:Here we have a beautiful show that came together through our beautiful working relationship with JP\npowerhouse rapper BRANDIE BLAZE. Brandie tops the bill\, spitting fire as it were\, antagonizing all the bullshitters\nover fierce beats and bringing it hard every single time. As she likes to say on occasion she is a boss. LA NEVE\nmakes the trip up from Providence\, and may be best known as the guitarist of agit-punkers DOWNTOWN BOYS\, but\nthis is a different story. Here he takes aim at the status quo and the right-wing cancer infecting all corners of our nation through killer electronic pop and drag performance. This is how my America sounds damn straight. JoE GriZzLy come at us out of Fitchburg\, serving as a nexus of the hip hop scene happening in the zone. Shotyme\, J. Jordan the Architect and DJ Menace will be bringing mad energy and mad flow with them to Dorchester. Zaafir brings more of that modern RnB flavor to the show\, mixing it in alongside interesting beats and lyrical flow. See Four rounds this stellar program out\, a new rapper on the scene\, listen up and you can be the first to brag about being a fan! \nBrandie Blaze\n \nLa Neve\nAmerican Sounds by La Neve \nJoe Grizzley\nJoE GriZzLy by JoE GriZzLy \nZaafir\nOutlaw by Zaafir \nSee Four\n \n$10 Suggested Donation\nAll Ages

SUMMARY:Times Two Series: Director's Showcase - Masary Studios x Kadence Ensemble x Tim Hall
DESCRIPTION:TIMES TWO SERIES TEAMS UP WITH MFA’S SOUND BITES TO RELEASE MARIA FINKELMEIER’S NEW ALBUM ON DECEMBER 6\nIronSounds by Maria Finkelmeier \nOn Thursday\, December 6th at 7pm\, Times Two shines the spotlight on co-director\, Maria Finkelmeier\, featuring works from her brand new album A Line that Terminates at the Present. In collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston’s “Sound Bites\,” the evening will feature Finkelmeier’s music performed artist collective MASARY Studios\, percussion quartet Kadence Ensemble\, and saxophonist/poet Timothy Hall. The event will take place in the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art and is free with museum admission. \n A multi-genre representation of Finkelmeier’s interest in current sounds\, A Line that Terminates at the Present was released to the public in November\, and blends a classical background with electronic beats and pop inspired melodies. The concert will feature percussion quartets performed by Kadence Ensemble inspired by her large-scale score from “Know No.” a commission by the Boston Center for the Arts. The works dissect the emotion one feels when hearing or stating “no\,” as an individual\, minority\, or society at large. In addition to the the quartets\, Finkelmeier will share a suite of marimba and electronics pieces called “Insomnia Suite” and a collaboration boasting the album’s title with Tim Hall. The event will conclude with two high-energy pieces performed by MASARY Studios\, featuring animation projection on the walls of the gallery. \nAbout Times Two: a concert series aiming to provide a common space where musicians from different backgrounds come together to share work and ideas. Whether it be from different places\, genres\, or styles\, each times two event pairs musicians with distinct voices in a laid back\, accessible context. Times Two is a program of Kadence Arts.
