SUMMARY:Mobius Spiderweb Presents Sienna Kwami
DESCRIPTION:Mobius Spiderweb is proud to present Sienna Kwami in an online presentation Sunday\, January 9 at noon. \nSpiderweb envisions the vast number of artists throughout the city of Boston as potential individual threads of a web to which Mobius can connect and then act as a connection point for others. \nSienna Kwami says: my practice contemplates becoming re: active theorizing [1] i am fascinated with human evolution through spiritual processes and our ability to deeply know ourselves or ‘PUT MEAT ON MY SOUL’ as sonia sanchez writes. this process is made possible when transness and queerness are centered — indigenous spiritual processes are not bound by binaries. as a haitian-ghanian black american\, i am also interested in the diasporic experience and its influence on the spiritual process re: resilience; fluidity; synthesis and illumination of new pathways. art objects can call upon dimensions beyond our physical nature and become embodiments of interdimensional visions. i am mashing of many pathways that crossed due to cosmic circumstances. i take many forms and my practice does as well. \n[1] “people of color have always theorized . . . and i am inclined to say that our theorizing (and i intentionally use the verb rather than the noun) is often in narrative forms\, in the stories we create\, in riddles and in proverbs\, in the play with language\, since dynamic rather than fixed ideas seem more to our liking.” ✧˖° barbara christian \nRegister in advance (here) \nEach presentation is followed by a lively group discussion.

SUMMARY:bent/haus: Ben K. Foley + Allison Tanenhaus
DESCRIPTION:Boston Cyberarts is pleased to present bent/haus (Ben K. Foley + Allison Tanenhaus) in their first dedicated show as a duo. \nbent/haus create mind-bending optical illusions\, harnessing light\, color\, sound\, video\, and data into imaginative and immersive 3D experiences. Whether bouncing off mirrors or suspended in mist\, bent/haus’s curious installations invite viewers to challenge their perception of both inner and outer spaces. \nUsing smartphone apps and AI\, Allison crafts psychedelic glitch art rich in abstraction\, vibrancy\, and unexpected dimensional qualities. Ben’s visionary\, custom-built vessels—fashioned from simple yet cleverly recycled materials\, and utilizing rudimentary tricks of physics—beam the 2D files into life. \nFor their exhibition at Boston Cyberarts\, Ben and Allison will reboot fan favorites like their hypnotic infinity box “Glitchfield\,” plus premiere all-new pieces—from cable access–inspired music videos to upcycled trompe l’oeil sculptures—imbued with their signature electro-organic experimentation. \nYou can learn more about bent/haus by visiting their website: https://benthaus.art/

SUMMARY:Human Nature
DESCRIPTION:On View: January 6–February 5\, 2022\nGallery Hours: Wednesday–Friday\, 4–7 PM; Saturday\, 1–4 PM\nReception: Friday\, January 14\, 6–8 PM\n \nGallery 263 is pleased to announce human nature\, a group exhibition featuring the work of thirteen New England-based artists. All of the artists with work on view previously submitted to Gallery 263’s Exhibition Proposal Series program and were curated into this special exhibition by Gallery 263 staff. In human nature\, the selected artists reflect upon individualized perspectives of the human experience. \nToni Pepe’s Mothercraft\, an ongoing body of work by the artist—some of which is on display in this show\, uses press photographs culled from flea markets and eBay. These images illustrate movement—socially and politically as records of the shifting identity of motherhood and women’s liberation—and durationally as physical images that were held\, touched\, and eventually abandoned. Caleb Cole’s work\, In Lieu of Flowers\, is a series of memorial portraits featuring trans people murdered due to state violence\, transphobia\, and neglect. Cole uses roses from their garden and portraits primarily made by the subjects to create a series of anthotypes—images created with photosensitive materials and the sun that cannot be fixed. In Right Angles and Modernist Tropes\, Josh Rondeau paints a nondescript domestic architectural space and calls attention to the impact these seemingly neutral spaces have on our bodies. \nIn human nature\, objects and images—both collected and constructed—are used to convey notions of home and lineage. Enlisting painting\, photography\, and sculpture\, the artists express sentiments of love\, loss\, and how to fit into the world through metaphors and indications of time. \nFeatured Artists: Amanda Case Millis\, Caleb Cole\, Danielle Fretwell\, Nathan Heilman\, Angie Lin Boyer\, Taylor Maroney\, Bradley Milligan\, Mursal Nazary\, Toni Pepe\, Josh Rondeau\, Tori Weston\, Tristan Alexander\, Will Weygint

SUMMARY:Vernacular Glamour
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Juan Omar Rodriguez \nFeaturing artwork by: Juan Arango Palacios • Maria Yolanda Liebana • Perla Mabel • Chloé Luisa Piñero • Ginger Q • Rixy • Moises Salazar • Jhona Xaviera \nWhat is possible when glamour\, grounded in quotidian experiences\, is embraced\, celebrated\, and engaged critically? This exhibition brings together a cross-section of contemporary Latinx artists working with the visual vocabularies of camp\, popular culture\, high fashion\, and baroque painting and architecture through vernacular idioms. Engaging the materials and forms of ball culture\, advertising media\, spiritual practices\, and street art\, the ten artists in Vernacular Glamour mobilize the artifice and exuberance of glamour to address the complexities of everyday life. \nThe artworks brought into conversation here reflect and reimagine what is familiar to queer\, working class\, and racialize peoples and often undervalued by majoritarian arbiters of taste. Vernacular Glamour focuses on figurative work to signal the ways in which the representation of certain bodies and experiences remains novel\, controversial even. Through photography\, painting\, textiles\, drawing\, and video\, the works in this exhibition unapologetically engage the experiences and desires of people who are Black and brown\, curvy\, fat\, feminine\, non-binary\, and queer. \nGallery Hours:\nMonday to Friday from 12-4pm & Saturday from 10am-2pm

SUMMARY:SOLSTICE GHOST STORIES Presented by John Francis Bittrich | Live audio experience by DJ Mikey Lee
DESCRIPTION:There’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long\, long ago… \n \n– \nIt’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year \n \nThe British tradition of telling ghost stories around the holiday season was already an old one when Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol. It was old when M.R. James began his yearly candlelit readings at King’s College\, Cambridge. It was positively ancient when the BBC introduced the program A Ghost Story for Christmas in the 1970s\, primarily as a yearly excuse to adapt James’ work. It’s a custom that never caught on here in the states\, however\, the Satanic Temple Salem would like to invite you to help us change that! \n \nJoin us on Tuesday\, December 21 for SOLSTICE GHOST STORIES\, featuring candlelit readings of two of James’ best works by local raconteur John Francis Bittrich and unique live audio created by Mikey Lee aka Coralcola aka DJ Poke Smot. Take in the gallery’s yuletide decorations\, nibble on snacks\, and sip on hot libations in a comfy\, cozy setting that’s sure to offset the shivers and chills offered by these classic ghost stories. \n \nJohn Francis Bittrich is a writer\, DJ\, and musician from Salem. His work has appeared in publications including Digboston\, the Boston Phoenix\, the Boston Hassle\, the Boston Compass\, and more. He’s worked as a ghost tour guide here in Salem and hosted a long-running radio program on WZBC at Boston College.

SUMMARY:Eleanor Elektra\, Animal Face\, Nate Cozzolino and the Lost Arts x Machines with Magnets
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nEleanor Elektra\nEleanor is an interdisciplinary artist who fuses music and visual arts. Her practice spans songwriting\, printmaking and installation work. Her music combines elements of folk\, jazz and classical music within the songwriter idiom to create unique cinematic songs.\nlinktr.ee/eleanorelektra\nAnimal Face\nA collective of musicians versed in experimentation and innovation\, implying a critique of existing aesthetic conventions. rejecting the status quo in favor of unique or original arrangements deliberately challenging or alienating audiences.\nfacebook.com/Animal-Face-114194403285021\nNate Cozzolino and the Lost Arts\nThere’s comfort in Nate Cozzolino’s raspy singing. Even as his subject matter is often dark\, a warmth permeates his music\, thanks in no small part to his supremely talented backing band\, The Lost Arts. There’s quiet triumph in here\, told in the form of subtle bass runs and drum fills\, all moving in perfect unison to Cozzolino’s cozy chord progressions. With a sound of important news from far away told in the form of a song\, Cozzolino has found his niche. -Dan Shay\, Motif Magazine\nhttps://www.facebook.com/natecozzolinomusic\n8:00PM | $10 at the door\nMachines with Magnets\nmachineswithmagnets.com\nPasithea Productions\npasitheaproductions.com/link-in-bio

SUMMARY:Sister Season of Sorrow: Caitlin and Nicole Duennebier // OPENING RECEPTION
DESCRIPTION:Since their youth\, Caitlin and Nicole Duennebier have been creating foreboding landscapes and narratives. Both have grown to have wildly different styles\, but their work still is commingled and speaks of the woods and stories made up from their childhood. Caitlin’s robust characters inhabit Nicole’s mystical\, otherworldly landscapes—drinking\, smoking cigs\, laughing\, and crying. The stark contrast creates a solid connection to the worlds that each artist creates\, exemplifying what can be possible when their two techniques collide. \nIn each exhibition\, the sisters attempt to use an entirely new medium; in Sister Season of Sorrow\, they are experimenting with clockwork. Each clock is its own environment set around the strictures of the timepiece\, but it is also sprawling and blithely unconcerned with being useful. The movements of each clock are attributed to the passing of time but they are swallowed up by the preoccupations of its inhabitants\, or entirely ignored as they go about their private miseries.

SUMMARY:Venn Art Market - A Visual Arts Market of Boston Musicians
DESCRIPTION:The intention behind Venn Art Market is to provide an opportunity for working musicians of Boston who have a second artistic practice to sell their work. Gigs have been hard to come by for many of us since the pandemic hit and in these colder climates we’re looking at a drop in gig opportunities as the nightlife moves indoors and the delta variant continues to spread. \nWe’re super excited to be hosting this at The Somerville Theater’s new space—The Crystal Ballroom. This is a pretty ideal location for a musician’s art market which we expect will draw in foot traffic from Davis Square. Artists will keep 100% of the revenue from their sales.
