SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Objects in the Monitor are Closer than they Appear
DESCRIPTION:The work presented in Objects in the Monitor are Closer than they Appear range in medium from installation to video to performance art and painting. Due to the subject matter and technology used\, many would label these eight emerging artists included in this show as “New Media” artists. Encompassing virtual reality\, the moving image\, video\, sound\, the immersive experience\, “new media” is a buzzword which carries high-brow connotations that alienate the viewer from the artist. The works presented in this show are not connected under the umbrella of ‘new media” but rather through their shared exploration of the phenomena and ideologies that drive our contemporary moment and the complications therein. Though our perceptions of the world are mediated by new technology\, we are careful to not worship progress as a false idol. \nWe are pointing to the ideological void created by the conflicts of religion and capital: to the ongoing struggle between iconoclast and God-maker. \nWe are pointing to the planned obsolescence of technology and society\, and to the nostalgia for a future that wasn’t already cancelled. \nThese cultural drivers produce symptomatic abuse and trauma that have become impossible to ignore. Through a repurposing of current communication technologies\, or “new media”\, with which we in the post-industrialized world are ceaselessly engaged with\, the contributors to OITM ask you to consider your relationship to these forces\, both globally and personally. Come see how close the objects in the monitor really are.

SUMMARY:Cambridge Arts River Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge Arts River Festival 6/1: Mermaid Parade\, Climate Action Extravaganza\, Music\, Sculpture Race \nJune 1\, 2019\n11 a.m. – 6 p.m.\nCentral Square Cultural District\nalong Massachusetts Avenue\nfrom Prospect Street to Sidney Street and beyond\nFREE\nhttp://cambridgeartscouncil.org/riverfestival \nThe Cambridge Arts River Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary by bringing the river to the Central Square Cultural District on Saturday\, June 1\, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The festival will fill the neighborhood with four stages of music plus dance\, theater\, immersive art experiences\, and vendors selling crafts\, international foods and craft brews. Admission is free. \nThis year’s festival features the debut of the Mermaid Parade. Marching bands and giant puppets will dance down Massachusetts Avenue at 4 p.m. All are invited to join in the parade. Just show up in your favorite marine-themed costume and be part of the festivities. (17\,000 people have already registered their interest in the parade on Facebook.) \nAt the Climate Action Extravaganza\, try the electric car ride and drive sponsored by Reach Strategies and Eversource\, build solar panels\, ride e-bikes\, and make a protest t-shirt with Wee the People. Elsewhere in the festival\, paint a mural with Liz LaManche about how women small-scale farmers are on the frontlines against hunger and climate change. Hear poetry about our warming world at the Poetry Tent. Cambridge Arts is moving the festival toward being a zero-waste event. This year half the festival stages will be solar-powered and we’re eliminating plastic water bottles and offering compost bins. \nThe festival day kicks off with the madcap People’s Sculpture Race at 11 a.m. Then multiple stages come alive with music\, dance and theater from noon to 6 p.m. Laszlo Gardony brings his piano jazz to the Jazz\, R&B\, & World Music Stage. On the Folk & Roots Stage\, hear Billy Wylder’s foot-stomping roots rock and Alisa Amador’s groovy blend of rock\, jazz and alternative folk. Paper Citizen offers indie pop and Adam and the Flood raps over stark rock on the Rock\, Indie and Alternative Stage. The Youth Stage presents singing\, dance\, musical theater\, improv comedy and a drumline. \nFestival visitors can paint a city snow plow truck; watch poems being printed by a 2-ton steamroller; and go on a tour of murals around Central Square. \nFood (barbecue\, Indian\, Jamaican\, Mediterranean\, Thai\, among others)\, arts and crafts will be available for sale. Then relax with a cool drink at one of the festival’s Beer Gardens with a cool drink from local breweries. \nJoin us on June 1 and see why Boston Magazine named the Cambridge Arts River Festival the area’s best arts festival in 2017 and 2018. \nNew at the Cambridge Arts River Festival in 2019: \n• The Mermaid Parade along Massachusetts Avenue at 4 p.m. will feature music by Rara Bel Poze and Band Land Brass Band plus giant puppets by The Puppeteers’ Cooperative\, Behind the Mask Studio\, The Cambridge Wildlife Puppetry Project and Honey Goodenough of Puppet Showplace Theater. All are invited to join in the parade. Just show up in your favorite marine-themed costume at 3:30 p.m. to line up for the parade at the Youth Stage near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Essex Street. \n• Climate change will be the central theme for the 40th annual Cambridge Arts River Festival. The Mermaid Parade\, activities in the Climate Action Extravaganza\, and poetry readings will speak to the urgency of these global changes and the event’s connection to the Charles River. Cambridge Arts also aims to make the River Festival a model of sustainability by moving it toward a zero-waste event. This year\, half the stages will be solar powered. The festival will offer compost bins. And Cambridge Arts will not be distributing water bottles. Instead\, water stations will be set up throughout the festival for visitors to fill their own reusable bottles. Vendors will use only recyclable or compostable dishes and no styrofoam\, no plastic straws\, no plastic bags. Vendors are also asked to compost all food waste and recycle used cooking oil in provided bins. \n• The 2019 Cambridge Arts River Festival will bring the river to the Central Square Cultural District. The move from the East Cambridge waterfront into the heart of the city celebrates the state’s recent recertification of the Cultural District\, the work in progress for the area to be identified as a Business Improvement District\, and the seven new murals in the neighborhood thanks to the Central Square Mural Project.

SUMMARY:Inner City Circle: An Intergenerational Show of Boston Artists
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://www.digboxoffice.com/events/95338508/inner-city-circle-an-intergenerational-show-of-boston-based-artists \nComing soon to the historic Strand Theater Gallery: Inner City Circle: An Intergenerational Show of Boston Based Artists \nOpening Reception: Saturday May 25\, 6-9pm\nand running until July 1st\, 2019. \nInner City Circle is a multi-generational\, multi-disciplinary exhibition that aims to forge a bridge between established\, mid-career and emerging Boston artists. These communities are often close in proximity yet far from unified\, due to disparities in resources and recognition. The seasoned artists of Inner City Circle have created their own opportunities for decades\, but with a lack of steady recognition and support for artists in Dorchester and Roxbury the resources and accolades generated have not made the impact they could have on the emerging artists of today. The curators behind Inner City Circle propose that if these artists had a place to gather and share their work side by side\, they could experience and build the kind of tradition and infrastructure that more affluent communities enjoy. It’s time to recognize the great tradition of visual art in the Dorchester/Roxbury area and the immense potential of its future. \nThis show is a collaborative curatorial effort between Hoodgrown Aesthetic\, a podcast created by Amber Torres and Althea “Daughter of Contrast” Bennett that tells the story of 21st-century artists of color living in Boston and abroad; Mfalme Kenyatta\, prolific artist and gallery manager at the AfroCaribbean Museum on Washington St. in Dorchester; and the Dorchester Art Project\, a community-driven art space in Fields Corner. \nThe artists participating in this show are as follows \nArielle Gray\nAyanna Warfield\nBarrington Edwards\nCedric Douglas\nGio “GoFive” Ortega\nJourdan Christopher\nLarry Pierce\nMfalme Kenyatta\nPaul Goodnight\nRixy Fz\nRocky Cotard\nSagie Vangelina\nShea Justice\nTyahra Angus\nWilton Tejeda \nThis show is funded in part by an Opportunity Fund grant received from the Boston Cabinet of Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Oneida\, Editrix\, Constant Smiles
DESCRIPTION:These massive pillars of psych\, rock and dark pop are holding up their part of the all-but-lost art of underground music. It’s like a sunken city that is only frequented by the truly freakish among us who deem it worthy of holding breath and perhaps sacrificing brain cells to experience. Tonight we dive way down again but this time the portal is Landrys Bicycles on Comm Ave. a little slice of heaven if you ask us – a concert venue committed entirely to the art and experience. CONSTANT SMILES kicks it off. This amorphous unit (comprised of at least one total head) has been fuckin around with acid folk and other psychedelic sounds for the better part of a decade from either Marthas Vineyard or NYC and we have been following along for a reason. Next up is W Mass’ EDITRIX featuring excellent and at least partially recognized guitar virtu-ohhellyeah-so Wendy Eisenberg and a couple fellow DIY veterans (Steve Cameron and Josh Daniel) shredding apart an otherwise very tight rock effort. We’ve learned this lesson before – sharp edges leave deep\, gnarly grooves and thats pretty much just what the ONEIDA clinic will be all about. That and the art of the drone. Did you know you can get completely lost in hypnotic\, droning bliss with a seemingly never-ending synth rock and roll groove? Well YA CAN if you got Oneida in the house. Get tickets early for this or all the old heads who may actually know more about music than you will beat you to it. I promise. -Sam P \nhttps://www.digboxoffice.com/events/95115100/boston-hassle-and-illegally-blind-present-oneida \nRomance by Oneida \nTalk to Me by Editrix \nJohn Waters by Constant Smiles

SUMMARY:Liz Hogg (NYC)/Nakedly/Zxari/Square Machine
DESCRIPTION:AVANTE-GARDE\, GUITAR & RnB \nA visit from prolific\, inventive NYC guitarist Liz Hogg is the impetus for this night of avant-garde\, guitar and RnB night. Wouldn’t be a Hassle Show if we didnt take you on a wild\, genre-bucking ride through disparate underground music scenes would it?! So we begin with mysterious local techno figure exploring electronic noisescapes with his project Square Machine. From there we make a hard RIGHT!? turn\, to be stunned by the unique blending of soul\, pop and heavenly violin moves of Cleveland native Zxari. Our special guest Liz Hogg is up next with her thought-provoking compositions and most likely a guitar and other instruments slung over her shoulders. And we close out this evening with a glimpse into the future of Boston music with soon-to-be-huge RnB unit Nakedly. Wild\, no? \nLiz Hogg by Liz Hogg

SUMMARY:MyCompiledThoughts\, Persons\, Just Karim\, Sam23
DESCRIPTION:This show is a sexy\, multigenre smoothie served chill. MyCompiledThoughts’ stream of consciousness/chillwave/hip hop/unnameable offering is hot off the press from right here\, Boston Mass. PERSONS slides down from Ontario\, with their experimental cross between punk\, disco\, and all things POPing off in between. Just Karim is another stunning local artist we discovered at the first ever DAP open mic\, bringing their cool\, wavy soul-expression back to wow the hour. Plus Sam23\, might be a new name to you but trust\, they got an old soul and it’s filled with all sorts of glam punk industrial futurism emotions. SUMMARY:Landowner\, Glued (St Louis)\, Rong\, Thighs
DESCRIPTION:This show is a post-punk thing no doubt. A knot of tangled musical threads twisted up for a night in Dorchester MA. DAP is the place as St Louis’ GLUED blows through\, their excellent\, chugging Pixies hued post-punk thread a dark maroon in color. W Mass’ Landowner bring perfecto\, exacto sounds that conjure many post-punk/underground acts\, yet Landowner remains their own band. Mechanics on lock down\, but not song ideas on autopilot. Hott\, and their thread? A neon yellow. Rong’s sound definitely bleeds into noise rocking territory\, but what is noise rock if not a post-punk. Allston stink lines come off this crew furiously and their thread is a darker brown. Thighs are JP-ish by nature and could be likened to a Fipper-ish mutant punk\, a curiously dark green in color. \nAnd that knot? A disgusting rainbow\, a show for you active listeners. \n– Dan Shea \nhttps://landowner.bandcamp.com/\nBlatant by Landowner \nhttps://glued.bandcamp.com/\nCool Evil by Glued \nhttps://rongteamgo.blogspot.com/
