SUMMARY:Joseph Allred\, Will Csorba & The Fossil Lickers\, Eli Winter and Ash & Herb
DESCRIPTION:Flyer by Mary Curtin \nPRIMITIVE AMERICANA FOLK AND PSYCH \nJoseph Allred\, Will Csorba & The Fossil Lickers (TX)\, Ash & Herb (VT)\, and Eli Winter (Houston)\n@Dorchester Art Project\n8pm\nAll Ages\n$10 Suggested \nHoly American dirt music has been kicking against the pricks for years gone by. These days\, when the worst among us have taken our highest towers\, special riders have lit out with sounds carried by their bodies from the days of very long walls that divided no one. These riders parcel the relentless sobriety of redwood abysms and Marrakeshi minarets\, surrendering all hope and summoning a new age on the back of daydreamt drones for you\, child of woman\, child of microtones\, child of dead nations. \nBoston Hassle presents an evening when you can know your riders. Fresh off the 1000rose.org festival\, breakout steel-string guitarists Will Csorba and Joseph Allred will bring to bear their American Primitive magic of the splintered Fahey doctrinaire. Will’s Fossil Lickers accompanists complete his reach for Appalachian and hillside fiddle wildness. Allred’s total sound is perhaps the truest holy transport available on the instrument in our time. Ash & Herb are the preeminent Psych Age dronestars of these parts and bring the heavy electricity. Intricate 12-string guitarcomber and driver’s wheel Eli Winter kicks it all at 8pm. \nJoseph Allred\nhttps://scissortail.bandcamp.com/album/fire-and-earth\nFire and Earth by Joseph Allred \nWill Csorba & The Fossil Lickers\nhttps://williamcsorba.bandcamp.com/\nThe Fossil Lickers by The Fossil Lickers \nAsh & Herb\nhttps://flowerroomrecords.bandcamp.com/album/ash-herb-in-now-time-vol-1\nASH & HERB – In Now Time vol.1 by Ash & Herb \nEli Winter\nhttps://eliwinter.bandcamp.com/\nTake No Notice / Woodlawn Waltz by Eli Winter

DESCRIPTION:art by @morally_ambivalent!! \nall ages\n$10 suggested donation \nNICE LINEUP of FINE SOUND-ART. From dynamic minimalism to frantic embellishment\, various stringed instruments\, synthesizers\, computers and their trainers will be in the spotlight tonight. SUMMARY:Altarations: A Selection of Shrines
DESCRIPTION:A shrine is a sacred place or object. It can be religious\, cultural\, personal\, political\, public or private\, dedicated to one deity or concept or person or event\, or exist with a multitude of meanings and devotions. It can be deliberately created as a sacred place or object\, or the object can evolve to be designated as sacred. It can be dedicated to the memory of the past\, or represent a hope for the present or future. \nDorchester Art Project is accepting submissions for “Altarations – A Selection of Shrines.” The show will be open July 21\, 2018 – August 26\, 2018.\nOpening reception July 21st 6-9pm\nClosing reception August 26th 1-4pm\nGallery hours Saturdays & Sundays 12-6pm \nWe received over 80 submissions in response to one of our gallery’s most successful calls for art\, Altarations: A Selection of Shrines. We proudly accepted over half of these proposals; from video installations of sacred rites\, to paintings of the subconscious and surreal\, to cabinets full of modeled genitalia\, to stations of worship for beloved celebrities. We believe introducing as many perspectives to the conversation as possible will culminate a truly divine experience. \nThe show will function as a collective shrine to our individual expressions. What do we find holy? As a society we are lacking a common mythology to give our lives spiritual meaning. We all find different ways to fill this void\, often channeling family traditions additionally through the lens of time and place. It is our intent to celebrate the endless and conversant interpretations of “shrine” by bringing as many pieces as possible together in one space.

SUMMARY:FaUSt\, Alec K Redfearn and the Eyesores\, Creative Healing
DESCRIPTION:FLYER BY BRUNO PEROSINO @bperosino \nALL AGES\n$20adv\, $23 dos \nTickets \n faUSt have taken the long and winding road. Jean-Hervé Peron and Werner Diermaier\, both founding members of the group\, have endured the ebbs and flows of the band over the decades and will tie the faUSt ship off for us in Boston for a performance on July 18th. Always among the more magically touched and intriguing of Germany’s wide ranging krautrock & kosmische musik communities of performers\, Faust (now faUSt) has not only proven to be one of the most influential groups of that lot\, but in their own circuitous way they’ve become one of the most enduring as well. Peron and Diermaier have been at the center of a slew of fantastic recordings by the band\, going back a decade +\, since the band’s “relaunch.” When you are uncompromising in your sonic adventure that’s how it can go. Peron & Diermaier’s faUSt is just that. Very much looking forward to what memories of Dadaist collage will surface as the messy spirit of this wonderful band touches down @ Brighton Music Hall for all of us Bostonians. \n Providence’s Alec K Redfern and the Eyesores have been winding their own path through the American and New England underground for 20+ years now! Fronted by composer Redfearn\, most often leading the motley crew by accordian through Eastern European tinged\, improv infected alternate universe/underground classics\, the Eyesores are a force that will have you wondering instantly if they are not simply the best band going that you didn’t know was from just just around the bend. \n Opening with a bent sweetness that vaporizes instantly at first lurching bite of this conjoined sax/violin being\, Massachusetts’ Creative Healing is the anti-funk bunch you’ve been wanting for. They really don’t care about whether you dance or not. They’re here about for your ears and mind. What you do with your feet\, I mean that’s your business. They’re about to release a record on Feeding Tube Records. A scarlet letter to wear with utmost pride. Get there early or feel utter sadness later. \nfaUSt\nhttp://www.bureau-b.com/faust.php\n \nAlec K Redfearn and the Eyesores\nhttp://www.cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/redfearn.html\nSister Death by Alec K. DESCRIPTION:Flyer by Kenn Crestwell @kenn.illu \nMint Green\, GOSH! (Chicago)\, The Water Cycle\, and The Owens\n8pm doors\nall ages\n$10 suggested donation \nThis night of shimmering indie pop will pluck on your heartstrings and make u smile indie’d with Chicago DIY troopers GOSH! rolling into town and appropriately awesome locals lined up. Definitely on the darker end of the spectrum\, the minimal pysch pop duo is welcome back to town with their fresh new record ODYSSEY in tow. It’ll be cool to bring it down a little between the funky\, energetic punk bounce of local favorites Mint Green and the expertly scrappy innocent indie pop tart of The Water Cycle. The Owens’ hazy mood swings will tie it all together nicely. Plus it’s just gonna be great to have these stand up\, scene pillar types holding it down in our new space!! Kind of a wild line up and with a common thread of good songs and that DIY ethos it’s bound to be a frickin show love fest show in here. SUMMARY:Hassle Volunteer Hang
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what that beach is just off I-93\, just south of the city? That’s Malibu Beach. Or\, more specifically\, that’s Malibu & Savin Hill Beach (they’re right next to each other\, forming a ninety degree angle). The state built Malibu in the 1930s on land filled during the creation of what would become Morrissey Boulevard. In the 1950s the construction of the Southeast Expressway cut off both beaches (and Tenean Beach) from the rest of Dorchester. Past water pollution and decades of general neglect has given Malibu Beach a bad name. Maybe it already had a bad name? It’s given name I mean: Malibu Beach. A minute amount of research led to few clues as to its origin. Perhaps readers could chime in with an answer? Malibu Beach is a sandy beach. In Boston. It gets a thumbs up from me for that. Put down a blanket and grab a book. Do some wading. Break out the summer fun games. Plus lots of parking & a Red Line stop (Savin Hill) really close by. Come by on July 10th for our Boston Hassle Volunteerhang evening beach party 6-9pm. It’s a good place to come meet all us freaks if you’ve ever wondered about volunteering\, and maybe roast a marshmallow or two. If I have my druthers you’ll be seeing even more Hassle parties @ Malibu Beach sometime down the line. However if you only do fancy beaches then forget I said a thing… \nhttps://bostonhassle.com/volunteer/

SUMMARY:Primpce (New Orleans)\, Nesta Rot\, Lucy\, Sponkers
DESCRIPTION:Flyer Art by Jeff Coyne! @warmfuzziess \nSONIC COLLAGE GIG. A wild delight of a night! I’m not sure it matters that this is one of the most interesting bands I’ve heard in awhile. Don’t mean shit if we cant get a few people to come check it out right? So what can I say? I’ve dug into the discography of PRIMPCE a bit and I can’t find anything that isnt freaky deaky and also engaging as hell. Part tight noise rock part patient sound art they’re apparently coming with a band that looks and sounds more like Devo than what they’ve captured to tape. That do it for you? Don’t you like Devo!? Besides that these lads are from New Orleans which is honestly a bit rare to have such southern travelers up here but shoot if you cant appreciate that then I should just give the eff up. Paired with this exceptional band will be weird ass kid NESTA ROT who has been emailing us from Fall River or someshit with his off-brand hip hop and noise pop. Obviously we said hell yeah dude play with Primpce. Similarly Lucy (who opened Hassle fest last year) comes from a stones throw (W Mass) to drop beats and deter creeps. Sponkers I aint ever heard of but I trust sophia with my life so even if we are the only two people at the gig it will be a wholly inspiring and unique sounding noise party that maybe we can film and make video of that we could then sell? Gotta support the touring bands somehow… So check out the links and check out some bands Spotify doesnt know about. At least not yet. \nPrimpce (New Orleans)\nNos Iau ar yr Arfordir by Primpce \nNesta Rot\nHappy Sadder Day by Nesta Rot \nLucy\nSOLITAIRE by L U C Y \nSponkers\nBumfuzzle by Sponkers

SUMMARY:Deep Hole\, Buck Gooter\, Reaches\, and Karman Voh
DESCRIPTION:All Ages\n$10 suggested donation \nWarm weather have you feeling dark and brooding? Crawl down to Dorchester this Sunday night if you know whats good for you. Cause even if you dont know your ass from your elbow if you hate the world like I do you will simply adore this blend of angst\, rock\, synths\, pop and feeling of hopelessness. Local veteran project of Pasha Koskins\, KARMAN VOH is known for shedding it’s skin and unveiling a new form every so often and we are confident whatever mix of cathartic distortion\, drum machine and sharp hooks will do just nicely for tonight. They set the stage for NYs REACHES whose music conjures up some sort of 80s underground dance club vibe but with a discerning towards the radical art you dont always get when you aim to get down. Then we have goddamn BUCK GOOTER who needs no introduction but you dont know what I’m talking about anyway so let’s just say that if there was ever a band whose music lived up to the bands underground clout these boys be it. Crushing beats\, demented winding tones of acoustic guitar and chains and some twisted spittle delivered by our friend Billy writhing around on the floor. It’s damn good. But it’s also just so wild that we thought we would bring in scene anchor DEEP HOLE to hole down the fort. I’m only going to use the word brooding twice. Self-described as major-depressive noise rock I will give a gentle nod to indicate that I agree with their bandcamp page and if that sounds like you then you sound like everyone I care about. DESCRIPTION:Flyer by Kayla Buono \nDuck Yed (sawyer/theftable/germaine/robidoux quartet)\, Painted Faces\, golden egg (wicked rot)\, Kee Avil (Mtl)\, Ditch Factor (Wendy Eisenberg’s new band 1st show!)\, Damien Scalise\, Frigid \n8pm\nALL AGES\n$7-$10 suggested \nSometimes shows and the performers that they are comprised of\, hurtling like so many space rocks through the universe\, come into contact with one another. Sometimes destruction is the result. On other occasions the two bodies become conjoined\, resulting in an entirely new body.\nThis show is an entirely new body kind of situation. And a large\, nearly “fest-like” one at that. \nKEE AVIL brings a deeply experimental brand of “pop” with her across the US/Canadian border from Montreal. Experimental sometimes guitar music that really seems to bleed electronics organically. I almost want to use the electroacoustic tag… DITCH FACTOR is massachusetts based and a bit mysterious and BRAND NEW! First Boston show. And guitar goddess Wendy Eisenberg is in the thick of it and we can’t wait to hear her bust out with the new jams. That’s enough already\, but NO\, brand new supergroup DUCK YED is playing too!? That’s a quartet of Angela Sawyer + id m theftable + Stephanie Germaine + Matt Robidoux for you! Untouchable noise paegentry awaits! And that latter ace axe slinger\, Robidoux is only on loan from Oakland\, CA briefly so catch him while you can!! \nWell traveled and locally beloved experimental songsmith/soundmaker DAMIEN SCALISE is next on this unwieldy yet burning brightly\, bill. Damien could literally take us anywhere on this solo journey. Take us Damien! PAINTED FACES offer a glittering synth drenched brand of lofi weird pop that is more enchanting than demanding so take that chill pill and ease on in for some’a this. FRIGID makes lower case noise and ambient sounds\, emitting from Cambridge MA\, and is one of the Hassle’s own. And last but certainly not least\, because if you believe in least\, really\, what are you doing reading to the bottom of this show blurb anyway\, is GOLDEN EGG (aka Wicked Rot). We’ve encountered this character before\, misery swathed experimental folk and noise isn’t cracked as much it is worn (but it is still cracked). SUMMARY:Bubble Teeth\, Good News (NYC)\, Thighs\, Muddy Wires
DESCRIPTION:Flyer by Alexis Brinkman \n8pm All Ages $7-$10 suggested \nOh what do we have here? A first thursday (temporary) reality rift. An opportunity for those looking to become somewhat more\nattuned with the Boston underground\, and courtesy of the visitors\, a slice of the the NYC underground as well. \nYes\, GOOD NEWS hails from the big apple\, but to make assumptions on the state of that city based upon the sounds\nthat these 3 bring with them\, the apple sounds troubled. GOOD NEWS brings a rock off-kilter\, gets into your head with\nthat stuff\, and then\, bang\, before you know it\, you’re off-kilter too. Noiser rock but not hard boiled ya know? A porous noise rock.\nBUBBLE TEETH we can only wonder and pray and hope and dream\, but to know that this new band includes members of\nnew basement killers BIRTHDAY ASS\, and pedigree’d basement killer BIRTHING HIPS (RIP)\, well it is OK to have faith.\nMUDDY WIRES is James Staub and he’s been making strange electronic sounds for sometime around Boston. He has a brand new\neletroacoustic batch of tunes called Hemispheres which you ought to check out. This is the record release for that album.\nLastly\, on the bill is a band that sound as if they are kicking the corpse of FLIPPER while performing fake CPR on the corpse of Beck (circa Mellow Gold). Thighs they are called\, and it’s really just too bad. AND SO MUCH MORE! \nBoston’s OG SWAGGERDICK headlines an also massively diverse day 2 of this NEU3\, Boston Hassle’s celebration of all ONLY New England music and performance that is ignored by mainstream audiences & media! Day 2 is an OUTDOOR party @ Art Farm and we couldn’t agree more with Swaggerdick’s latest missive “Fuck Gentrification.” So great to have a great left of center Boston rapper like OG headline. And it’s a full on rap party to end the night with hard hitters Brandi Blaze and Ill Addicts\, both from Boston\, bringing plenty of verses\, and not playing around. Better be looking for a good time!!! \nLeading up to the hip hop fireworks are a bevy of New England underground sound treats for you: the blues punk theatrics of Boston legend Andy California\, Vermont oddball folk jewel Ruth Garbus\, lo-fi legends Gerty Farish & The Shrinnirs from Connecticut\, and loads more experimental wonders that you might never have even considered the existence of. SUMMARY:John Krausbauer\, Kaori Suzuki\, PRONE\, Chris Strunk
DESCRIPTION:Flyer by Rayjaun Pollard aka Cloudkarma @cloudkarma_rp \nDrone away the Monday blues with this noise gig at Dorchester Art Project. Metaphysical brain soup…slip into a gooey\, meditative state and let the sonic whirlwinds swallow all your doubts and fears. Two enigmatic and brilliant touring artists – John Krausbauer and Kaori Suzuki – are bringing their talents to beantown\, alongside the extraterrestrial echoes of locals Prone and Chris Strunk. Time to dream with your eyes open…get to the gig! \n\nJohn Krausbauer (b. Indianapolis) is a music conceptualist/multi-instrumentalist currently living in Oakland\, CA. \nHe has performed and presented his music in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Japan\, in a multitude of settings – from basements\, sidewalks\, and rock clubs to colleges\, churches\, and art galleries. Numerous recordings of his have been released on independent labels in the US\, Europe\, and Japan. \nA long time purveyor of the ur-drone and trance-psychedelia\, his work involves audio transmissions for TOTAL/immersive sensory experience. Transcendence through repetition\, duration\, alternate tunings\, maximum volumes\, and (often) stroboscopic lighting. \nHis current music projects include the Ecstatic Music Band (a 10+ member-collective of strings players); solo music for voice\, violin\, and synth; his collaboration with partner\, Kaori Suzuki\, with bells\, voices\, strings\, tape; the Minimalist psych-punk group Night Collectors; his systems-based phase compositions; and an ongoing collaboration with the steel bodied resonator guitar player\, R. Keenan Lawler. \nhttps://debaclerecords.bandcamp.com/album/blues-for-the-grave\nBlues for the Grave by John Krausbauer \n\nKaori Suzuki (b. Tokyo) is a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music living in Oakland\, CA. \nShe has toured the U.S. and Japan\, and has presented her solo and collaborative music in a variety of settings from DIY venues and galleries\, music festivals such as Debacle Fest (Seattle)\, S1 (Portland)\, and the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival\, to academic institutions such as Mills College\, Stanford (CCRMA)\, and Berkeley Art Museum. \nShe previously ran her instrument building project Magic Echo Music (2009-2015)\, collaborating with various musicians on creating custom interfaces and analog electronic instruments (ASTRO\, Mood Organ\, Manuel Knapp\, Panabrite). Selected synthesizer/feedback recordings are found on her CD\, Newsun (Sounds et al). \nHer recent music projects seek to create heightened listening states\, producing saturated tonal dimensions by way of auditory distortion products and other inner ear phenomena; her solo performances often involving high volume playback\, spatialization\, and long duration vhf-combination tones for maximum effects. She also plays in collaboration with partner\, John Krausbauer\, creating an immersive sound/light environment with tape\, voice\, bell percussion and amplified strings. \n \nPRONE\nBed Music Gold by Prone \nChris Strunk

SUMMARY:Carla dal Forno\, Erika Nesse\, sundog
DESCRIPTION:Flier Design: Digital Collage Series by @fearlessmindart – “MIND ART; the Road to CROWN” #mindart #crown #fearlessdupoux \n$12 Adv\, $12-15 DOS \nTickets:\nhttps://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3392110 \nBerlin via Australia just-out-of-reach pop + electronics conjurer Carla dal Forno is coming\nto visit us for what is no doubt going to be an intimate and special Boston Hassle\nshow in a special space (First Parish Church) in Harvard Square… \ndal Forno weaves the kind of songs (both in her solo work and her previous work with the likes of F ingers)\nthat are hushed but commanding and room filling. Some have conjectured that this may be due to the collision\nbetween worldiness and otherworldiness in her music. It is difficult to say for sure though. We can\,\nsurely say however\, that it is a rare treat to have Ms. dal forno performing in the Boston area. \nJoining Carla dal Forno on this bill will be fractal music maker and software designer\nErika Nesse whose music is fairly otherworldy in its own right I must say. Also on the bill is folk music maker\nSundog whose vibes are sad\, but it’s an uplifting sadness\, mostly. it won’t bring you further down\, but\ncould serve as a a comfortable sweater to rub if your already low. \nI think it’s a lovely show. \nCarla dal Forno\nhttps://blackesteverblack.bandcamp.com/album/you-know-what-its-like\nYou Know What It's Like by CARLA DAL FORNO \nErika Nesse\nInside Glass Gardens by Erika Nesse \nSundog\nThe Measured Mile by sundog

SUMMARY:Lonnie Holley quartet + Bill Orcutt solo
DESCRIPTION:Flyer by Gia \nLONNIE HOLLEY (quartet)\nBILL ORCUTT (solo) \nco-presented by Non-Event and the Boston Hassle \nFIRST PARISH IN CAMBRIDGE (Helverson Parlor)\n3 Church Street\, Harvard Square\n8pm | $15 gen / $12 students & Non-Event members \n“[Holley] makes the kind of sculpture–and produces the kind of music–that changes people. It gets into their emotional and intellectual core and forces them to rethink art and history\, as well as their own assumptions about how the world works.” – SF Weekly \nLONNIE HOLLEY is a self-taught sculptor and musician from Atlanta. His sculptures\, constructed from found materials\, are in the collections of The Whitney Museum\, The Smithsonian and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2012\, at age 62\, Holley made his debut as a recording artist. His improvised songs defy easy categorization\, but their humanity\, unconventional beauty and surprising catchiness have brought Holley critical acclaim. He has released two albums on the Dust-To-Digital Label\, and performed with David Byrne\, Daniel Lanois and Bill Cunningham and many others. \nHolley’s songs and lyrics are improvised on the spot and morph and evolve with every event\, concert\, and recording. No two songs\, and no two shows\, are the same. The layers of sound in his music are the result of decades of evolving experimentation. \n \n“Orcutt plays with the spirit of a doomsday preacher\, spewing surreal\, dark imagery from a guitar with only four strings running down the neck of his acoustic.” – Pitchfork \nBILL ORCUTT’s sound is a hiccup-stuttered reimagining of blues guitar. One can hear familiar Southern folk scales between Orcutt’s jagged solo acoustic phrases\, pulling and pushing melodies into unresolved fragments that eventually come unmoored in vast and satisfying note-torrents. Former guitarist and founder of the noise/punk rock duo Harry Pussy\, Orcutt was already a significant name in experimental noise circles when he released his solo debut in ‘96\, and has published a string of releases since confirming his essential role in the contemporary experimental scene. \n \nNon-Event’s programming is supported in part by the Boston Cultural Council\, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, and admistrated by the Mayor’s Office of Arts + Culture.

SUMMARY:Bad History Month\, Giving Up (KY)\, NEST\, and Ragu
DESCRIPTION:Herter Park Amphitheatre 7pm All Ages\nFREE Outdoor Show! \nDIY stalwarts GIVING UP are actually more of a wont-quit outfit. This gang have become bonafide veterans of the Allston basement scene despite being based in Kentucky\, Iowa and Illinois. That’s cause they’re Sophomore Lounge crew\, our Louisville fam\, and they’ve been bringing their scrappy punk and pop realness to us Bostonians for over 5 years now. How appropriate then that Bad History Month will be around for this damn reunion – like that JP Drive In show in 2013 with G Toss and Saralee
