SUMMARY:The Battle of Algiers
DESCRIPTION:Bombs going off in public places\, the use of torture to gain information\, and a stark divide between an Arab population and their Eurocentric neighbors. I’m not talking about modern news headlines; this is The Battle of Algiers\, the film which brought harsh realism to the Algerian War of the 1950s and early 60s. With a nationalist movement seeking full independence from France\, Algeria becomes a full on war zone that soon shreds the social fabric of the North African colony\, causing both sides to use increasingly extreme measures in pursuit of their goals. Shot on location not long after the formal war ended\, the film feels like a first rate documentary of both then and now. \n \nThe Battle of Algiers\n1966\ndir. Gillo Pontecorvo\n123 min \nWednesday\, 1/4\, 7:30PM\nThursday\, 1/5\, 5:00PM\nFriday\, 1/6\, 5:00PM\nSaturday\, 1/7\, 12:30PM\nSunday\, 1/8\, 3:00PM\nWednesday\, 1/11\, 7:30PM\nFriday\, 1/13\, 5:00PM

DESCRIPTION:Marital bliss\, Bergman style. Marianne (Liv Ullman) and Johan (Erland Josephson) are an upper middle class couple living the typical facade; happiness\, affluence and marital stability. SUMMARY:Surviving the Game
DESCRIPTION:A weird adaptation of the story\, The Most Dangerous Game\, this is a film featuring Ice-T’s dramatic take on a homeless man hunted by the social elite. Surviving the Game is not the best thriller out on the market but it’s certainly one of the most absurd films in early 90’s existence. Ice-T plays Jack Mason\, a homeless man down on his luck with suicidal thoughts plaguing his every day. Jack makes a deal with Thomas Burns (Rutger Hauer)\, an American businessman who hires Mason as a hunting guide for a very expensive/suspicious adventure in a patch of abandoned woods. What transpires is the hunt designed by Doc Hawkins (Gary Busey) – an all-out manhunt for Jack Mason’s life and a challenge over who’s going to survive the weirdest unnecessary game. \n\n\n\nSurviving the Game\n1994\ndir.
SUMMARY:Paths of Glory
DESCRIPTION:Wartime absurdity a la Kubrick. As part of the Brattle Theatre’s celebration of the centennial birthday of screen legend Kirk Douglas they’ll be screening the masterful adaptation of the World War I drama about a French army officer (Douglas) trying to defend the lives of three soldiers facing execution for cowardice. Banned from being shown in France for nearly 20 years due to its portrayal of the French military in a less than glamorous light\, the film has since transcended its narrow minded pigeon holing by the armed forces to be considered among the very best films about “justice” during war. \n \nPaths of Glory\n1957\ndir. SUMMARY:The Master
DESCRIPTION:Tonight\, come catch one of the best movies from 2012 in its natural 35mm on the big screen. A thinly veiled dramatic account of Scientology’s beginnings\, Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell\, a WWII veteran troubled by more than just the war. A vagabond with no prospects\, he comes across a charismatic man (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who leads a newly founded movement which proclaims to have the answers to all. Quickly integrating himself into the group’s followers\, Freddie undergoes the movement’s teachings and attempts to “cure” his inner demons through their methods. Needless to say\, it’ll take a lot of work. Also plays on Dec. 28. \nhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=fJ1O1vb9AUU \nThe Master\n2012\ndir. Paul Thomas Anderson\n144 min
