SUMMARY:The Panto Games: Winter Panto 2021
DESCRIPTION:“imaginary beasts’ annual tradition goes digital with their own madcap spin on The Hunger Games trilogy!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nLast winter\, imaginary beasts’ audiences voted on what panto tale they’d most like to see next — but Demon King Discord thinks that’s far too easy. He’s devised a malevolent matchup in which panto stories must send tribute characters to a digital arena to compete in the first-ever . . . PANTO GAMES! \nWill Prince Siegfried leap to the finish and take home the crown? Or will Calamity Dame hit the bullseye and take him down? Can Little Red harness the power of good\, right\, and true — and deliver Demon King Discord his ultimate due? \nJoin the beasts live on Zoom for our first-ever online Winter Panto. Tickets can be reserved here — you can pay what you wish by selecting the Choose Your Price! ticket option and making a donation to support future imaginary beasts’ productions. Space in our webinar is limited\, so we encourage you to reserve one ticket per device that will be used to access the webinar. \nIf you have reason to purchase multiple tickets please ensure they are registered to different email addresses. \nAuto-generated closed captions will be available. \nWe strongly recommend watching the event on a computer (not a tablet or phone) for the best viewing experience. \nWHAT IS PANTO? \nSet against the backdrop of a classic story\, fairy tale\, or popular legend\, a band of rag-tag characters fight for the good\, right\, and true with a handful of puns along the way. As a battle of good versus evil plays out\, it is only with the enthusiastic support of the audience that evil is vanquished in the end! This is Panto\, a widespread and well-loved theatrical tradition from the UK that imaginary beasts have been keeping alive in the States for over a decade.” \n\n(Image and text via Imaginary Beasts) \n\n

SUMMARY:PRC Speaker Series: Ruddy Roye
DESCRIPTION:“Radcliffe Roye is a Brooklyn based documentary photographer specializing in editorial and environmental portraits and photo-journalism photography. A photographer with over twelve years of experience\, Radcliffe is inspired by the raw and gritty lives of grass-roots people\, especially those of his homeland of Jamaica. Radcliffe strives to tell the stories of their victories and ills by bringing their voices to matte fibre paper. \n\n\nRecently\, Radcliffe began experimenting with interpretative photography\, preferring to allow the abstract content within the frame to dictate the voice and purpose of the image. \nHis Elements series focuses on the bold\, austere\, graphic and emotionally raw imagery\, that is trapped behind a diffused lens. With painterly abilities\, Radcliffe uses this diffused methodology to subtly awake the subconscious and expose the isolated figure or vision painted within a rhetorical frame. ” \nTickets HERE \n(Text and image by the Photographic Resource Center)

SUMMARY:CPL CRAFTS: Hope in Motion with Chanel Thervil
DESCRIPTION:What does hope look like? Tap into your sources of light with local artist and educator Chanel Thervil. In 2016\, Thervil created the community-inspired sculpture\, EMERGENCE: What does hope look like?\, while an Artist Resident at the Boston Center for The Arts. Thervil invited passersby “to contemplate ideas of aspiration and optimism” and her sculpture continued to evolve out of conversations with neighbors and friends. Thervil will speak about this work and lead us through a sculpture workshop where we create a “Hope Chest” based on our own ideas of hope and those we glean from our community\, family and friends. \nChanel Thervil is a Haitian American artist and educator obsessed with all things art\, community\, and history. While Miami born and Brooklyn raised\, she’s currently Boston based. She believes that all of the sights and sounds from places she’s been can be found in the juxtaposition of colors\, shapes\, and materials she uses to create her art. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Pace University and a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She’s been making a splash in the city via her educational collaborations\, public art\, and residencies with institutions like The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, The DeCordova Museum\, The Urbano Project\, and The Harvard Ed Portal. Her work has been featured by PBS Kids\, The Boston Globe\, The Boston Herald\, The Bay State Banner\, WBUR’s ARTery\, and Hyperallergic.

SUMMARY:ON RECONCILIATION: A READING OF LETTERS BETWEEN HANNAH ARENDT AND MARTIN HEIDEGGER
DESCRIPTION:“Please join us for a performance of Dora García’s On Reconciliation\, a public reading of letters exchanged by German philosophers Hannah Arendt and Martin Heidegger. Arendt and Heidegger’s fifty year correspondence covered the rise of Fascism\, the Second World War\, and some of the most significant philosophical developments of the 20th century. The letters written by Arendt\, a German Jew who fled Europe to escape the Holocaust\, and Heidegger\, a member of the Nazi party\, illuminates their complicated relationship and loyalty to one another\, framing reconciliation as a political position. \nOn Reconciliation encourages debate around the question of ethics and artistic production. Following an introduction by artist Dora García and Senior Curator-at-Large Ruth Estevez\, the selected letters will be read by Samantha Hill\, Acting Director at the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College\, and Rajesh Sampath\, Associate Professor of the Philosophy of Justice\, Rights\, and Social Change at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. A conversation will follow. \nThis event is presented in conjunction with Dora García: Love with Obstacles.” \nFree + open to the public \nText from www.brandeis.edu/rose/ \nImage courtesy of Rose Art Museum

SUMMARY:Opening Celebration for Painting Edo at The Harvard Art Museums
DESCRIPTION:PAINTING EDO: JAPANESE ART FROM THE FEINBERG COLLECTION WILL BE ON VIEW FROM 2/14/20-7/26/20 \n“Painting Edo — the largest exhibition ever presented at the Harvard Art Museums — offers a window onto the supremely rich visual culture of Japan’s early modern era. Selected from the unparalleled collection of Robert S. and Betsy G. Feinberg\, the more than 120 works in the exhibition connect visitors with a seminal moment in the history of Japan\, as the country settled into an era of peace under the warrior government of the shoguns and opened its doors to greater engagement with the outside world. The dizzying array of artistic lineages and studios active during the Edo period (1615–1868) fueled an immense expansion of Japanese pictorial culture that reverberated not only at home\, but subsequently in the history of painting in the West. \nBy the early 18th century\, the new shogunal capital of Edo (present-day Tokyo) was the largest city in the world. After centuries of conflict and unrest\, the growing stability and affluence of the period encouraged an efflorescence in the arts. Artists creatively juxtaposed past and present\, eternal and contingent\, elegant and vulgar in a wide range of formats and styles\, from brilliant polychrome compositions to monochromatic inkwork. Painting Edo explores how the period\, and the city\, articulated itself by showcasing paintings in all the major formats—including hanging scrolls\, folding screens\, sliding doors\, fan paintings\, and woodblock-printed books—from virtually every stylistic lineage of the era\, to tell a comprehensive story of Edo painting on its own terms.” \n  \nText from harvardartmuseums.org \nImage: Maruyama Ōkyo\, Peacock and Peonies\, Japanese\, Edo period\, 1768. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Hana Yilma Godine of Spaces Within Space at Gallery 263
DESCRIPTION:“Gallery 263 is pleased to announce Spaces Within Space\, a solo exhibition by Hana Yilma Godine. This show is part of Gallery 263’s Exhibition Proposal Series—a program in which shows are selected by a competitive jurying process. In Spaces Within Space\, the artist draws upon time spent living in numerous places—including a childhood in Ethiopia\, an experience studying abroad in Spain\, and\, most recently\, a move to the United States—to layer space and search for commonalities between forms in both her large-scale figure paintings and intimate landscape paintings. \nExploring and discovering visual languages from different materials—including oil and acrylic paint\, charcoal\, gesso\, fabric from Ethiopia\, and collaged magazines from Ethiopia—permits Hana to layer transparent surfaces on canvas and fabric. With these mediums\, she draws\, then loses the drawing through coloring; eventually\, she finds the original marks\, which she likens to rediscovering herself. This layering of space mirrors the artists’ views of the realities and transitory nature of a globalized world and the experiences of different places and time that is central to it. By working in this manner\, Hana unfolds an accumulation of history\, creating a composite of women from different places and different times to create unique spaces. \nAbout the Artist \nHana Yilma Godine was born in the southern Ethiopian village of Arssi Negele and grew up in Addis Ababa. After graduating from high school\, she attended the Abyssinia School of Fine Art and Design\, where she studied drawing\, sculpture\, and painting\, which prepared her to enter Addis Ababa University Ale School of Fine Arts and Design. There she studied painting and drawing. Hana studied painting and serigraphy in Spain as an exchange student. She also taught drawing at the Lideta Architecture College in Addis Ababa. \nShe moved to the United States to continue her education\, studying theory and literature\, which has helped her learn about American life and culture. Her work has been exhibited at the Alliance Ethio-Francise Art Gallery\, Muse Gallery\, the Columbus Convention Center Project\, and Clark Gallery. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at the Boston University College of Fine Arts.” \n  \nImages and text from http://www.gallery263.com/exhibitions/spaceswithinspace/
