SUMMARY:last day of RACHEL ALLEN: AIRPLAY @ THE URBANO PROJECT
DESCRIPTION:Urbano is proud to feature airplay\, a site-specific interactive installation by Rachel Allen (Nez Perce) and the culmination of her Fall 2019 artist residency at Urbano Project. \nBreathing is a voluntary and involuntary function. Sometimes we are conscious of our breaths\, or made aware of our breathing air’s origin. But these moments come infrequently. The same can be said of our ideologies. There are times when we purposefully take in and accept\, or reject. But often belief systems are so pervasive and invisible\, they are obtained without conscious thought. \nI aim to unsettle the air we breathe and otherwise manipulate. If we consider the ubiquitous material we are suspended in\, then we can begin to contemplate what seems invisible\, like beliefs we uncritically accept. We might examine the political\, cultural\, and environmental implications of atmosphere and sky. \nButtons throughout the installation can be pressed to move air around this space. The inflated forms reference stories from my Nez Perce culture. Indigenous cosmologies can teach us how to attend to the air and reaffirm our connections to nonhumans. I invite the audience to intentionally interact with air\, understand its agency\, and recall our interconnectedness. Perhaps then we will start to breathe easier.\n– Rachel Allen (Nez Perce) \n\nAbout the Artist: \nRachel Allen (Nez Perce) is an artist and curator\, exhibiting her artwork and presenting on her scholarship nationally. An Assistant Curator at the Peabody Essex Museum\, she recently exhibited at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University.  She has dual citizenship with the United States and with her Native nations\, the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho. Allen holds an MFA in Printmaking and an MA in Arts & Cultural Management and Museum Studies from Michigan State University. She received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. \nVisit her website & follow her on Instagram @rachel_c_allen \nAs Artist-in-Residence\, Allen provided tools for Urbano’s youth artists to create place-worlds\, or stories upon close examination of the land and their environment.  Students have researched the recent and ancient history of a location of their choice from a variety of facets–municipal\, social\, geological\, current conditions\, personal connections and their stories sharing happened through oral tellings or performances\, and artist books. \n\n29 Germania St.\, Jamaica Plain\, 02130 MA\n1pm – 6pm Tue – Fri \n  \nText and image from http://urbanoproject.org/artist-in-residence

SUMMARY:NEW IKEBANA AT PRACTICE SPACE
DESCRIPTION:“Now\, a generation of young artists are reinterpreting ikebana based on the practice’s core principles\, rather than its traditional mores. In doing so\, they are making us reconsider an old art form — and what it has to say about nature.” \n-The Rise of Modern Ikebana \n  \nFrom 11/19 t0 11/25\, Helen Singh-Miller’s MassArt students will be showing their interpretations of Ikebana\, or “making flowers alive\,” the ancient Japanese practice of flower arrangement.  Visit Practice Space in Inman to learn more about the students\, their pieces\, and how they interpret space and nature through this revitalized discipline. \n  \n(featured work: ‘Beautiful Death’.  Melvin Rosario. 2019.)

SUMMARY:PROMO: Sense Writing with Madelyn Kent @Art & Soul
DESCRIPTION:How bad is your writer’s block? New York playwright and director Madelyn Kent is bringing Sense Writing to Cambridge this weekend for a two-day workshop and it might just be the approach that’s been alluding you. Sense Writing has been called “yoga for writing\,” and it’s no surprise that the workshop takes place at Art and Soul Yoga or has been written up in yoga publications as well as literary journals. Kent has about 100 gentle exercises that she weaves together with writing prompts to get your creative juices flowing again. Cambridge\, which has no shortage of writers and yoga practitioners\, might be the ideal place for such a workshop. Still\, skeptics will appreciate the endorsement Kent has drawn since founding Sense Writing in 2012. \nAs Erin Ward of Yoga Weekly acknowledges: \nThe link between the articulate movement and the flow of writing is often not readily apparent. In fact\, at times they are at odds. We go to yoga to escape the mind’s chatter and hope for that divine creativity to awaken through exertion and through breath. But Madelyn has a different approach to calling upon this ghost of creative flow. She’s asking us to simply try less. To let spirituality and creativity separate and not be so hard on ourselves. She offers a space where people can give themselves permission to slow down and draw awareness to subtle movements of the body and by doing so reawakens a fascination with the world\, both on and off the page …Turn off the chitter-chatter of the mind\, breathe\, focus\, let go and run with the words that come. \nArt and Soul Yoga is at 91 Hampshire St.\, in the Wellington-Harrington neighborhood not far from Inman and Kendall squares. Information is here. \nPresented in collaboration with Storefront for Somatic Practice\, dedicated to the exploration of everyday movement\, its foundation in childhood development\, and its role in the arts.

SUMMARY:Canon-ish: Canonical Images in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Canon-ish is a play on what is classified as canonic art in the digital age. \nCanon-ish was created using search engine results for works accepted to be masterpieces in the canon of art history. Each search turns up hundreds of versions of these paintings\, each varying slightly in color and cropping. \nPrompted by the proliferation of images in the contemporary art world and on the internet\, Canon-ish explores what is considered art versus what is seen as a reproduction\, and who is considered a genius artist versus who is seen as derivative. In effect\, I aim to question why reproduced\, digital images of canonic pieces are often more easily accepted as works of art than conceptual works being made today. \nEmily Bass is a curator\, artist\, and the Arts Editor of the Boston Hassle. She is interested in how our relationships to images and objects change over time\, a topic that she has explored through makeup\, fashion\, and now\, images in the canon of art history. \nCanon-ish will be on view Tuesday December 4th through Friday December 7th in the lower level of Lesley University’s Lunder Arts Center\, open to the public between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. More information can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/events/390132661529607/?active_tab=about \n

SUMMARY:Closing Reception: Matter of Intention with Chloe DuBois and Renée Silva
DESCRIPTION:Boston Hassle’s Chloe DuBois and painter\, Renée Silva are are exploring ideas of intention and material through careful curation. \nPeople tend to compartmentalize and organize every aspect of their lives. Systematic categorization seems to be engrained in our mental and physical habits. \nExperience these ideas at the Harvard Ed Portal’s Crossings Gallery. \nThe exhibition is on view Monday-Thursday 10am-7pm and Friday 10am-5pm. From now until October 4th. There is a closing reception on the 4th from 5-7pm.

SUMMARY:Your New {Cosmic} Reality - Light Works by Ben K Foley
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception Saturday May 26th\, 6-9pm\nGallery hours Saturdays and Sundays 12-6pm\nClosing reception Friday June 29th\, 6-9pm \nBen K Foley creates mind-bending 3-dimensional illusions using a wide range of recycled and repurposed industrial materials. Analog creations cleverly constructed to move viewers in an overwhelmingly digital world\, these simple sculptures create complex interactive visual experiences\, often referencing aspects of Zen\, numerology\, and universal patterns in math and nature. These expressions encourage play and wonder deep within ones perception of space and time. \nCurrently working in and outside Boston\, Ben K Foley has shown work in galleries and museums in the US and Europe\, and is honored to have been granted residencies and opportunities for permanent installations both domestically and abroad. BKF’s unique practice as a kinetic light artist began while studying architecture and drafting at Colorado College. He is an affiliate with Collision Collective out of MIT\, a founding member of the CartoonLife crew\, as well as former administrator of DAP.
