The utter weirdness that is Russia’s ASIAN WOMEN ON THE TELEPHONE is back. In fact, it’s been back since the beginning of this year when the band put out their most recent album, YOU HAVE REACHED YOUR DESTINATION. Experimental rock-ness of myriad varieties from the prolific band nearing a decade of existence, I find myself returning to the track “нечистый” on the new record. A lurching thing, bearing marks of post-punk and industrial music, always with a sick sense of fun flowing somewhere nearby. This reminds me of Philly heros of yesteryear NEED NEW BODY if they were slightly less hyper, had a lot more Putin breathing down their necks, and had way more Soviet-era architecture to brighten their days. Pitch-shifted vocals and tortured horns dance above a convenience store filled with inebriated drum corps rebels and rejects. This is its own thing.
