I’m just going to say it – this is a film that made Icelandic musician and lead actress Bjork cry during filmmaking. In fact, it made her swear off of acting forever due to her problems with director (and controversy-magnet) Lars Von Trier.

Considered by Von Trier to be a “musical”, DANCER IN THE DARK follows factory worker Selma, who is secretly going blind from a degenerative illness. She escapes the hardships of her daily life with fantastical daydreams, including elaborate song and dance routines (yes, Bjork sings a LOT). When tragedy strikes, Selma’s luck gets even worse — leading up to one of the most devastating final sequences in recent memory.
You may leave this film feeling shaken and maybe a little bit confused about what life is and what it all means and whether or not Bjork is a real person. There are really incredible performances on the part of her and the other actors — also a song that won a lot of awards that Thom Yorke is involved in (for some reason).
